How to Start a Daily Quiet Time With God (Even If You Only Have 5 Minutes)

A simple 5-minute quiet time routine for busy Christian women: gratitude, a short reading, prayer and one line of reflection.

You want to spend time with God every morning. Then the alarm goes off late, the kids need breakfast, and by the time you sit down the day has already started without you.

Here is the good news: a quiet time does not have to be long to be real. Five focused minutes with God will shape your day more than an hour you never get to. This is the simple routine we built our Prayer Journal around.

Minute 1: Be still

Before you open anything, take three slow breaths and invite God into your morning. "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). You are not starting a task. You are meeting Someone.

Minute 2: Give thanks

Write down three things you are grateful for. Keep them small and specific: the warm coffee, a text from a friend, a good night's sleep. Gratitude turns your eyes toward what God is already doing.

Minute 3: Read a few verses

Read one short passage, even just five verses. A Psalm or a few verses from the Gospels is perfect. Underline the one line that stands out to you.

Minute 4: Pray

Pray about the day ahead in your own words. Write one or two requests so you can look back later and see how God answered. This is where faith grows: in the record of His faithfulness.

Minute 5: One line to carry

Write one sentence you want to remember today. It might be a verse, a promise or a simple reminder like "God goes before me."

Make it stick

  • Same time, same place. Tie it to something you already do, like your first cup of coffee.
  • Keep your journal open on the table the night before.
  • Don't aim for perfect. If you miss a day, start again tomorrow. His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22–23).
  • In the evening, add one line: where did I see God today?
