How to Teach Kids to Embrace Their Filipino Heritage

Raising children outside the Philippines can make it challenging to keep our culture alive. But as parents, we have the beautiful responsibility of passing down our heritage with pride and purpose.

Start with language. Even teaching simple words like po, opo, salamat, and mahal kita helps children feel connected to their roots. Share Filipino stories and folktales at bedtime and play traditional games like sungka or tumbang preso during family time.

Introduce Filipino food at home — let them help cook adobo or lumpia, and explain the stories behind each dish. Celebrate Philippine holidays like Buwan ng Wika, Pasko, or Independence Day, even in small ways.

Expose them to Filipino music, dances, and clothing. Let them wear a barong or terno, listen to kundiman, or try dancing tinikling. Most importantly, share your personal stories growing up in the Philippines — your childhood memories, lessons, and values.

At Gawang Kamay, we believe every product is a tool to teach culture. With love, intention, and creativity, we can raise proud Filipino kids—no matter where in the world we are.

Let’s keep our heritage alive, one child at a time.
