Why We Celebrate Filipino Traditions—Even Miles Away

Filipino Sinulog Dance

Living far from the Philippines doesn’t mean leaving our culture behind. In fact, being miles away makes Filipino traditions even more meaningful. As a mother raising children abroad, I see the importance of keeping our heritage alive—not just for me, but for the next generation.

We celebrate Pasko with parols in our windows, cook adobo on Sundays, and teach our kids to say “po” and “opo.” These traditions remind us of home, connect us to our values, and bring comfort in a foreign land. They are small but powerful ways to stay grounded in who we are.

Celebrating our culture is more than just nostalgia. It’s a declaration of pride. It’s teaching our children where they come from, and that being Filipino is something to cherish, not forget. Whether it’s dancing tinikling at a community event or simply using a tabo at home, every gesture matters.

Through Gawang Kamay, I share a piece of this beautiful culture—handcrafted, heartfelt, and proudly Filipino. Because no matter where we are in the world, our traditions keep us together.
