Have you ever reached a point where you couldn't remember what genuine happiness felt like? 🌿🎙️🎧
Not because you didn't want to be happy...
Not because you weren't trying...
But because life had simply been hard for so long.
If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.
Many people spend months—or even years—surviving grief, burnout, anxiety, depression, illness, heartbreak, or overwhelming life circumstances. Eventually, survival becomes routine. Joy begins to feel unfamiliar, almost like it belongs to someone else.
But here's something incredibly hopeful:
Joy isn't lost forever.
Sometimes it's simply waiting beneath the weight of everything you've been carrying.
That is exactly what we explore in Episode 40 of Labels Don't Define Us, where I am joined by my wonderful guest, Becky, for one of our most heartfelt conversations yet. 🌿🎙️🎧

Joy Doesn't Disappear—It Gets Buried.
One of the biggest misconceptions about emotional healing is believing that once we've struggled for a long time, we've somehow become permanently broken.
The truth is very different.
Our brains are incredibly adaptable.
Long periods of stress, grief, trauma, or emotional exhaustion can temporarily change how our brains process positive emotions. It becomes harder to notice beauty, laughter, excitement, hope, and connection.
That doesn't mean those emotions are gone.
It means your nervous system has been working overtime trying to protect you.
And protection often looks like emotional numbness.
Why We Sometimes Stop Feeling Joy
Many people believe they're "just not joyful anymore."
But neuroscience tells another story.
When we're exposed to chronic stress, our brains naturally prioritize survival over pleasure.
Instead of looking for moments of happiness, the brain becomes busy asking questions like
• Am I safe?
• What's the next problem?
• What if something goes wrong?
This is completely normal.
It's not weakness.
It's biology.
The beautiful news is that the brain can also learn to recognize joy again.
Becky Shares Her Story ❤️
One of the most moving parts of this episode is Becky's honest and vulnerable story.
After years of experiencing multiple losses and emotional exhaustion, she found herself wondering if joy would ever return.
Like so many people, she wasn't looking for extraordinary happiness.
She simply wanted to feel alive again.
Her journey reminds us that healing doesn't usually arrive in dramatic moments.
Sometimes it begins with something beautifully ordinary.
A quiet morning.
A walk outside.
The sound of birds.
A smile from a stranger.
A tiny moment that reminds your heart it's still capable of feeling.
Why We Sometimes Brace for Happiness
Have you ever noticed that just as life starts feeling good, your mind immediately prepares for something terrible to happen?
You're finally relaxing...
Then suddenly you think,
"This won't last."
"Something bad is probably coming."
This protective habit is surprisingly common.
Instead of fully experiencing joyful moments, we brace ourselves for disappointment.
While this feels like self-protection, it often prevents us from experiencing the very thing we're longing for.
Joy. Learning to stay present during good moments is one of the most powerful parts of emotional recovery.
Small Moments Matter More Than Big Ones 🌸
We often imagine joy as something huge.
A dream vacation.
A promotion.
Winning the lottery.
Finding "the perfect life."
But lasting joy is usually much quieter.
It's found in:
☀️ Morning sunlight through your window
☕ A warm cup of coffee
🌼 Fresh flowers
🐝 Watching a bee visit a flower
📚 Reading a great book
🎵 Your favorite song
💙 A genuine conversation
😊 Laughing unexpectedly
These tiny experiences gently remind our brains that life still contains beauty.
The Science of Positive Emotions
One fascinating part of this episode explores how positive emotions do much more than simply make us feel good.
Research has shown they help us.
✨ Build emotional resilience
✨ Improve creativity
✨ Strengthen relationships
✨ Lower stress
✨ Improve physical health
✨ Increase optimism
✨ Expand our ability to solve problems
Joy isn't just pleasant.
It's healing.
Motivation Doesn't Come First
One of the biggest myths about recovery is believing we need to "feel motivated" before taking action.
In reality...
Action often comes first.
Waiting until you feel like yourself again may keep you waiting much longer than necessary.
Sometimes healing begins with one tiny decision:
Go outside.
Call a friend.
Listen to music.
Take a shower.
Smile at someone.
The action creates the motivation—not the other way around.
Your brain can learn joy again. 🧠
One of the most hopeful ideas we discuss is that our brains remain adaptable throughout our lives.
Every time we intentionally notice something positive—even for a few extra seconds—we strengthen new neural pathways.
Little by little...
Hope becomes easier.
Peace becomes more familiar.
Joy becomes less surprising.
This doesn't erase painful experiences.
But it allows healing to exist alongside them.

Three Gentle Ways to Begin Today
If you've been struggling for a long time, don't pressure yourself to "be happy."
Instead, try these simple practices.
🌼 1. Notice One Beautiful Thing
Look around you.
Find one thing that makes you pause.
It could be sunlight.
A flower.
A cloud.
Your pet.
The sound of rain.
Stay with it for just a few moments.
💛 2. Let Yourself Receive Good Moments
When something nice happens...
Don't rush past it.
Pause.
Breathe.
Allow yourself to enjoy it without immediately expecting something bad.
🚶 3. Take One Tiny Step
Don't wait for motivation.
Choose one small action today.
Sometimes one tiny step becomes the beginning of an entirely different chapter.
Joy Is Not a Betrayal of Your Pain
Perhaps the most important message in this episode is this:
Finding joy does not mean forgetting what you've been through.
You don't dishonor your grief by smiling again.
You don't erase your trauma by laughing.
You don't invalidate your struggles by feeling hopeful.
Joy and pain can exist together.
Healing doesn't ask you to forget.
It simply invites you to keep living.
