3 Little Birds: The Art of Balance

I. Perch

Three little birds on a wire

that hums with other people’s electricity.

They do not argue about direction.

They lean.

One shifts.

The wire trembles.

The other two adjust

without calling it sacrifice.

This is how small creatures hold up a morning —

by redistributing weight

before it becomes a fall.

No leader.

No applause.

Just the mathematics of balance

solved in feathers.

II. Field Manual for Flight

Rule one:

no one lifts alone.

The first bird reads the wind.

The second bird reads the first bird.

The third reads the silence between them.

They rise as a rumor

of wings.

If one falters —

the sky does not announce it.

The formation bends.

You would not notice

the quiet correction

unless you were also

trying to stay aloft.

They call this instinct.

We call it teamwork

we forget —

it is older than language.

III. After the Storm

Rain breaks the afternoon

into smaller afternoons.

Three little birds beneath a gutter’s edge —

wet, indignant,

undefeated.

One shakes first.

The second shakes harder.

The third laughs in droplets.

They will dry each other

without saying so.

Later, when the air clears,

they will lift —

not because the storm ended,

but because they endured it

together.

Feather to feather.

Pulse to pulse.

Sky as shared blessing.
