How to Organize Quilting Fabric Scraps and Actually Use Them

How to Organize Fabric Scraps by Size So You’ll Actually Use Them

Organize quilting scraps by usable sizes instead of color so precuts and leftovers are easier to find—and more likely to become quilts.

The Scrap-Bin Problem

There comes a point in a quilter's life when the scraps begin reproducing.

At least, that's what it feels like.

You save them because they're perfectly good fabric. Then they go into a basket, drawer, or tub.

Eventually you need a 2½-inch strip and realize you have absolutely no idea whether there's one somewhere in that mountain.

One solution is to organize at least part of your scrap collection by usable size.

Why Sort Scraps by Size?

Sorting entirely by color looks beautiful, but size-based storage answers a different question:

What can I make with this?

A 5-inch square is immediately useful.

So is a 2½-inch strip.

So is a stack of half-square triangles left over from another project.

Instead of rediscovering and measuring the same scraps over and over, you can prepare some of them for future projects as you go.

Don't Cut Everything Into Tiny Pieces

You don't need to turn your entire stash into precuts.

In fact, I'd keep larger pieces intact when possible because they're more versatile.

Instead, create a system for the scraps that are already getting small.

You might keep categories such as:

  • Squares
  • Strips
  • Rectangles
  • Half-square triangles
  • Quarter-square triangles
  • Crumbs
  • Orphan blocks

Within those categories, separate the sizes you use most frequently.

Start With the Sizes You Use

You don't need a tub for every possible measurement.

Look at the quilts you actually make.

If you constantly reach for 2½-inch strips and 5-inch squares, start there.

Your storage system should serve your quilting—not the other way around.

What About Really Tiny Scraps?

Give yourself a minimum size.

Anything smaller can go into a crumb bin if you enjoy crumb quilting.

That bin can eventually become its own project rather than slowly taking over the sewing room.

And if you don't enjoy sewing tiny scraps?

You have permission not to save every last inch of fabric.

Label Everything

Clear tubs are especially helpful because you can see the fabric, but labels make the system much faster.

That's why I made a set for you.
