Prioritizing "Team Harmony" Over "Individual Power"

When you start working at a Japanese company, you may notice that "Teamwork (Wa/Harmony)" is valued as much as, or sometimes even more than, individual skills.

1."Vague Boundaries" of Individual Tasks

In Western cultures, once your assigned tasks are done, your work is finished. In Japan, however, there is a tendency to overlap boundaries between roles to ensure the team achieves its overall goal.

Support Culture: Even if your own work is done, you are expected to help colleagues who seem busy.

Passing the Ball: The focus is on reaching the goal together as a unit, rather than achieving it alone.

2.The Decision-Making Process:"Nemawashi"

To keep teamwork smooth, "Nemawashi"—the practice of consulting with stakeholders behind the scenes before a formal meeting—is essential. In Japan, meetings are often less about making a final decision and more about confirming that everyone is on the same page.
