My Multiplication Board
Printable Multiplication Learning System
FOCUS • RECOGNIZE • THINK • CALCULATE • PRACTICE • REMEMBER
"My Multiplication Board" is a printable visual learning system designed to help children understand multiplication as a connected system, rather than a collection of separate facts.
How does it work?
Each multiplication table from 2 through 9 has its own color. Children follow the color horizontally across the earlier tables, using the Commutative Property of Multiplication to recognize that, for example, 3 × 5 and 5 × 3 represent the same multiplication fact. They then continue vertically through the selected table.
This helps children recognize relationships, avoid unnecessary repetition, and build multiplication knowledge from facts they already understand.
The board also uses visual patterns, highlighted focus areas, and matching product colors to help children notice connections and recognize multiplication relationships.
Think & Calculate
The accompanying Multiplication Properties & Tricks section provides additional ways to understand and calculate multiplication, including:
- 5's Multiplication
- 9's Multiplication
- 11's Multiplication
- Commutative Property
- Associative Property
- Distributive Property
- Multiplication by 0, 1, 10, 100, 1000 and more
By combining the board's visual organization with these properties, patterns, and calculation methods, many multiplication facts can be worked out from facts the child already knows rather than memorized independently.
For multiplication facts from 2 through 9, the approach leads to 21 core facts to learn independently. This reduction is a result of understanding connections and relationships—not the goal of the system itself.
From 1 Through 12
The complete learning system extends to familiar multiplication facts from 1 through 12:
1 — Multiplication by 1
2–9 — Learned and practiced through the board
10 — Multiplication-by-10 method
11 — 11's Multiplication method
12 — Distributive Property, using 12 = 10 + 2
The Learning Approach
FOCUS → RECOGNIZE → THINK → CALCULATE → PRACTICE → REMEMBER
The goal is to help children move beyond simply asking:
“What is the answer?”
and begin thinking:
“How is this multiplication fact connected to what I already know?”
