Double Triple Basketball

Double Triple Basketball

A double triple arises when a players scores in the double digits in three out of six statistical categories. For example, they may score 18 points, make 12 rebounds, and assist 10 shots. The following are the statistical categories:-

  • Points
  • Assists
  • Rebounds
  • Steals
  • Blocks

A double-triple is reached when a player has double digit stats (at least 10). Even if our player had zero blocks and zero steal, this line would still be s triple-double because three categories completed the condition of 10 number. By far the most common triple double, you will get combine points, assists and rebounds. Other types of triple doubles are definitely possible. For instance, points + rebounds + blocks – but they’re for more rate. However, there are other terms which are Double-Double and Quadruple-Double.

Reason of Commonness of Triple-Double

Triple double used to be a rare sight in NBA. But in modern era, it seems like at least one player puts up this stats every day, because the pace of the game has increased manifold and different leagues started without any consolation of any association / council. The average league pace for the last three seasons in the highest in the last 30-years. More possessions = more opportunity for putting up stats.

It is also worth mentioning here that the idea of reaching a double or triple double may seem out of reach. Years ago, that may have been the case. But you one may have noticed that players are achieving this stats line on more normal basis. Has the game or the criteria altered? Not really, but two possible explanations for this occurrence:-

                       Increased Game Pace

Some specialists explain that doubles are much more common now a days because of the pace of the standard NBA game has amplified. In basketball terms, pace means to the average number of possession each team use per game. Over the last few seasons of matches, the standard league pace has been much higher than it’s been in the past few decades.

                        Positionless Game

Some experts explain that the uptick in double doubles and triple doubles is due to the Positionless nature of the modern NBA game. Today it is much easier for players in all positions to push the stats up, even ones that aren’t usually associated with their specific position. For example, decades ago, there would be towering power forward putting up a majority of team’s rebounds, together with scoring in the paint. Even now, smallest players have chance to score a rebound, as more and much more team uses team-oriented offense like five-outs, shooting, three-pointers that leave the rebound open. With an increase in ball and player movement and five designated shooters on the team, it’s more common for players to score in statistical categories, especially point and assists.

Prominent players of Triple-double

Russell Westbrook hold the record of most triple double in his career and nobody has ever come closer to his record. If what wasn’t enough, this point guard is also the only player in the history of the league to have average a triple double over four distinct season. He started with Oklahoma City from 2008 to 2019, then he moved to Washington from 2020 to 2021 and L.A Larkers from 2021 to 2023.

Josh Giddey, Australian shooting guard for the Klahoma City Thunder, made history in NBA. Though the Thunder lost to the Dallas Mavericks 86 to 95 Giddey became the youngest player in the league’s history to record triple double. In that game, Giddey scored an impressive 18-points, 15-assists, and 13-rebounds. At that time, he was just 19-years and 84-days old. His page put Giddey just ahead of the previous record-holder.
