A SEL Activity - Releasing doubts

Adrift https://adrift.site/ is one of those wonderful sites I find every now and then that was created by someone who had a wonderful idea, rather than someone who wanted to make some money! It reminds me a bit of the early days of the internet, except that it looks beautifully designed.

Adrify website

Anyway, Adrift is a sight where you can go and write down your worries (anonymously) and then turn them into paper boats that float away on a black digital sea. That may sound a bit pointless but I think for students it's a nice writing and reading activity - You can click on the boats to see what others have written. There's no need to log in or register, so it's an instant activity and the site works on mobile and in the browser.

You can also switch from doubts to cares and share words of care and reassurance. Again these turn into digital paper boats and you can click on them to read what other people have shared.

How to use this:

  • Get students to think of something they are worrying about. They don't have to tell anyone. Then give them the link to the site and get them to write about their doubt/worry and post it on the site.
  • Get the students to click on the paper boats and read some of the other doubts and think about what they could say to reassure the people and what advice they would give them.
  • Ask the students to click to 'Care' and read some (4 -5) of the messages. Ask them to choose the one they liked or agreed with the most.
  • Ask the students to share their own care message on the site.
  • Ask the students if using the site has changed the way they feel (Are they happier/ Feeling better? More/Less worried?)
  • Ask the students if any of the doubts/worries were similar to their own or very different?

Ask the students to discuss:

  • why they think the site was created
  • what the creator wanted to achieve
  • what kind of person created the site
  • what they have learned from using the site

I hope your students enjoy this activity.
