Building Curiosity - Deserted Hotels in Japan

If you have been following me for a while you'll know that I'm a fan of AtlasObscura - I think it has some really wonderful articles and images about curious things around the world that are great to share with students to stimulate their curiosity.

This is another entry that I really like, and it's about Japanese hotels that have been closed down. The article has some great images of the places, and a bit of text about each one.

This is great material for getting stduents to do creative work too.

How to use it:

  • Get students to read the article and find out how many places it mentions. You could also get them to find out about the hazards of visiting these place - The article mentions a few.
  • Get students to decide which they would like to visit and then get them to research how to get there and what it would cost.
  • Get students to choose one and make it part of the plot of a horror film.
  • Get the students to tell the story of the last people to leave/ stay there.
  • Ask students to try to find out why it closed (or they could invent the story of why it closed).
  • Ask students to try to find the places on Google Street View.
  • Ask students to imagine a journey there and write the story.

AtlasObscura is a great resource for finding interesting materials that will engage our students' curiosity and open up the world to them, so do explore it more and drop me a line if you find other really interesting articles that you can use with your students. You can also sign up to their newsletter and get regular updates.
