If Paul Atreides Were A Warning - The Dune Encyclopedia Would Have Told You! (It Does Not)

Despite the misinformation. The DUNE Encyclopedia is the only contemporary to the original DUNE novels and sanctioned extended universe material that actually had Frank Herbert's editorial imput and access to his notes.

If Frank Herbert had intended Paul Atreides as some great warning about Charismatic Leaders or Messiahs. It definitely would be found within the pages of Dr McNelly',s comtenory text.

But instead the Encyclopedia is both sympathetic towards Paul and even Leto II The God Emperor. Presenting both as necessary and right even despite the institutional forces working against them for their own power.

At no point in Paul's three major Encyclopedia entries does it frame Paul as a false Messiah. Indeed it highlights how he was exactly as he was presented to be burdened by his vision of the future and trapped between his personal desires and the greater good of humanity. This is not a warning. This is hero who is presented one safe pathway for humanity who he is responsible for putting the species on the correct road for survival despite the personal cost to himself and his own happiness. We often call such individuals who are faced with impossible but necessary choices heroes. That is infact the classic and correct label. So this is definitely not some absurd idea of subversion of the heroic journey. It is actually its most mythical expression of it.

So much so. That even Brian Herbert, despite his talking points couldn't help but give Paul Atreides a heros reward - Very likely the ending found in his father's DUNE 7 outline.
