What is poetry?
Poetry is a type of literature that uses a distinctive style and rhythm to convey ideas or themes. Poetry is distinct from prose as it involves line breaks. Poems may be split into stanzas (verses). Some poetry rhymes, but there are also many examples of poems that do not rhyme. Many children's picture books are written using rhyming poetry.
How do I make money off poetry?
There are a number of different ways to make money from poetry. You could self-publish collections of your poetry and sell them directly to readers. You could sell individual poems to literary magazines, or you could sell a collection of poetry to a poetry publisher. Some poets also make money through other means, such as performances of their poetry, or even through writing poetry for greetings card companies.
How much can I sell poetry for?
Most poetry collections sell for around $10-$15, and you'll need somewhere between 30 - 100 poems for a full-length poetry book. If you're selling individual poems to an editor or publisher, rates can vary wildly - you might receive anything from a few dollars up to several hundred dollars for a single poem. At the very low end of the scale, some small literary magazines only pay in copies of the magazine, not in cash.
How do I submit a poem for money?
You can submit your poetry to online publications and literary magazines. (You're very unlikely to have a poetry collection published until you've established a track record with individual poems.) Make sure that the publications you're submitting to do actually publish poetry. You don't need a literary agent in order to submit your poetry - in fact, most agents don't deal with poetry because it isn't as profitable as fiction.

How can I sell poetry?
If you have a collection of poems that you want to sell, either as an ebook or a physical book, it's very easy to do so using Payhip. You will retain full rights and control over your work. Simply create a free Payhip account, upload your poetry ebook file (or create a physical product listing instead), and set a price for your poetry. You can then sell it through your free Payhip store or direct from your website. Payhip will take a 5% transaction fee on each sale - much less than many other platforms like Amazon, which can take up to 70%.
How do I copyright my poems?
As soon as you write down a poem, it's automatically copyright to you in many countries. That means no one can publish your poem without your permission, and no one can claim your poem is their own work. If you're concerned about copyright, consult your country's government website or check with a copyright lawyer in your country.
Is there a market for poetry?
There is a market for poetry, but it's important to note that this is considerably smaller than the market for novels. Poetry is very much a niche market, and many poetry collections that sell well are either classic collections or academic anthologies. Even well-established poets don't sell in anything like the quantities of bestselling fiction authors.
Do Instagram poets make money?
Poets on Instagram and other social media sites can make money not only through sales of their poetry books direct to fans and live events but also through sponsorship, affiliate income, and sales of products like mugs printed with poetry. Instagram (or Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, etc) is essentially their marketing platform.
