How to play the 3-6-9 Game, K-Pop Variety Style?

You know that chaotic, hilarious moment in BTS's Hot Ones interview where they started playing 3-6-9 and the host lost miserable? If you're like me, you probably want to play it yourself as well. But how?

If you haven't seen it yet, first of all, go watch it right now, we'll wait. Ok after watching that hilarious episode, welcome back, because now you're obsessed and you want to play it too. Same. Let's break it down.

So… What Even Is the 3-6-9 Game?

The 3-6-9 game (삼육구 게임, sam-yuk-gu in Korean) is a classic Korean counting game that you've probably spotted across dozens of variety show clips: from Running Man to Weekly Idol. It's dead simple in theory, absolutely unhinged in practice, which is exactly why idols love torturing each other with it.

The basic idea? You count up as a group: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6… but here's the catch: every time a number contains 3, 6, or 9, you don't say the number. You clap instead.

That's it. That's the game. Easy, right?

Narrator voice: It was not easy :-).

The Rules (Yes, There Are Actual Rules)

Here's how you play:

  1. Sit in a circle (or a line, or a chaotic pile: idol variety show seating optional but encouraged).
  2. Start counting from 1, going around the group, one number per person.
  3. When you hit a number that contains 3, 6, or 9 you clap instead of saying it out loud. No speaking. Just clap.
  4. If a number has two 3/6/9 digits (like 33, 36, 63, 99…), you clap twice.
  5. Mess up? You're out or you take a penalty, depending on your house rules.

Numbers That Get a Clap (just to be safe ;-):

  • 3, 6, 9
  • 13, 16, 19
  • 23, 26, 29
  • 30, 31, 32, 33 (double clap!), 34, 35, 36 (double clap!), 37, 38, 39 (double clap!)
  • …you get the idea.

Why Does It Go So Wrong So Fast?

Because your brain is absolutely not built for this under pressure.

The second it's your turn and everyone's staring at you and the counting is going fast, every number you've ever learned in your life vanishes. Is 36 a clap? Wait, is 30 a clap? WHY CAN'T I REMEMBER HOW TO COUNT?

The game gets progressively more chaotic because:

  • The speed picks up as you go (players usually count faster and faster)
  • The numbers get harder once you're past 30, nearly every third number is a trap
  • Group pressure is real everyone laughing at you makes your brain short-circuit instantly

The BTS Hot Ones Moment

In their Hot Ones appearance, BTS played 3-6-9 between bites of increasingly spicy wings — which, honestly? Inspired. Already crying from the hot sauce AND trying to remember if 69 is a double clap? Iconic suffering.

How to Play K-Pop Variety Style

Okay so the base game is fun, but if you want to play it the full Korean variety show way, with friends, at a party, at a fan meet, or even on a stream, here's how to level it up:

Set a Penalty

Classic variety show style, losers face a consequence. Fan-favourite options:

  • Eat something spicy (Hot Ones crossover, anyone?)
  • Do an embarrassing dance or aegyo on command
  • Sing the first line of a random K-Pop song chosen by the group
  • Answer a fan trivia question about your bias group

Speed Round

Start slow and keep a steady rhythm by clapping hands on knees — clap, clap, clap — and each person says their number on a clap. Speed up every time someone survives a full round.

Elimination Mode

Each time someone messes up, they're out. Last one standing wins (and gets to assign the penalties: very important power, to be used responsible ;-).

Performance Penalty Variant

If you mess up, you don't just sit out — you have to perform something. Think: best idol impression, random chorus, or your most passionate fanchant. This one turns into absolute chaos around five people in and we love it.

Tips So You Don't Embarrass Yourself Immediately

(You will still embarrass yourself. But maybe slightly less.)

  • Whisper-count in your head as others go so you always know what's coming
  • Watch for the 30s that stretch is a minefield and it will get you
  • Don't overthink it the more you second-guess, the more you freeze
  • Practice alone first no shame in counting to 100 in your room before game night
  • Accept your fate sometimes you're going to clap on 7 and there's nothing any of us can do

Final Thoughts

The 3-6-9 game is one of those perfect variety show games because it's simple enough that everyone can play, but hard enough that nobody actually plays it without at least one spectacular failure. It's the great equaliser. Your bias has fumbled this game. Your fave has made this exact panicked face. And now it's your turn.

Gather your friends, pick your penalties, and may the odds be ever in your favour especially once you hit the 60s.

Now go rewatch that BTS Hot Ones video one more time for "research." You've earned it. 💜
