The cakeverse is an alternate universe trope created by a korean twitter user called rune_communicat back in 2016 (though it does have quite a big community in the Japanese fanbase as well). The cakeverse as a concept, was inspired by the omegaverse AU trope, and more specifically how Alphas tended to get obsessed with an Omega's pheromones/scent.
While the cakeverse was originally inspired by the omegaverse, as it has grown in popularity it has also taken a life of its own. Like the omegaverse there are commonly three categories a person can fall into, a Fork, a Cake or a Normal.
A Fork is someone who has either since birth or over the course of their life, completely lost their sense of taste and the only thing they're able to taste is the "sweetness" of a Cake. Forks are usually met with suspicion and disgust because of their cannablistic tendencies when it comes to Cakes, and many choose to hide their status in fear of any hate or discrimination received. Though, like in all societies, there are the minority who revel in the hate and are commonly known to attack, rape and even eat Cakes.
A Cake is a person whose flesh and bodily fluids tastes particularly sweet or like cake to a Fork, but unlike Forks who are aware of their status as a Fork, Cakes can live out the rest of their lives never knowing or realising they're a Cake, because only Forks can scent and taste the sweetness of a Cake. Normals don't lose their sense of taste or do they taste sweet to a Fork.
Again, while the cakeverse has been inspired by the omegaverse, the cakeverse in itself doesn't have the basic elements that makes up the omegaverse like designations, estrus cycles (heats and ruts), special "features" (knots, locks etc.), packs, mating (and mating bites), glands and so on. Beyond the fact that Forks have absolutely no sense of taste and Cakes being the only thing a Fork can actually taste, the cakeverse and the omegaverse have no other similarities.
They don't have any special "features" or estrus cycles like heats and ruts, or "packs" and neither are there any type of hierarchy system in the cakeverse like in there is in the omegaverse.
The cakeverse, even as it has grown in popularity over the years, is a blank slate (more or less), that you can put your own spin into if you'd like. Heck, you can even incorporate the cakeverse into your omegaverse and make something of that. The sky is the limit and beyond having the basics of the cakeverse (Forks, Cakes and their (kinda) cannablistic relationship), you can do whatever your imagination desires.
Fun fact, when the creator of the cakeverse had been asked why she went with cakes, she had apparently responded with "that she just likes cakes".
