WHAT IS THE GERVERSE?
The concept of gers — or mers or bios or moyes — was popularised/created in the chinese bl/danmei community and though the concept has grown into other fandoms, it's still commonly found in the bl/danmei scene.
While this alternate universe trope doesn't technically have an "official" name that it's commonly referred to as, in this guide I'll be calling this AU trope the "gerverse" just for consistency's sake (and I just like the sound of it).
The gerverse is an alternate universe that revolves around the existence of "gers" — or mers or bios or moyes — a race of bioengineered "humans" who, while typically perceived as cisgender males, can be impregnated by males — and females in some worldbuilding — and can give birth.
Gers — or mers or bios or moyes — are also typically described as being shorter and weaker than the general population of both males and females, but this can vary depending on the worldbuilding.
(Side note: in some takes on the Gerverse only men and Gers (or mers or bios or moyes) exist in this universe and in other takes women, men and Gers (or mers or bios or moyes) exist in this universe. It really all depends on the author's worldbuilding)
In some takes on the Gerverse, Gers — or mers or bios or moyes — are typically identified by a (red) birthmark that can be found in the middle of their forehead or between their brows.
Sometimes these identifying marks can also be found on their wrist, forearm or the back of their hand. There are variations to this, but typically the brighter a ger's — or mer's or bio's or moye's — birthmark the more "fertile" they're considered to be.
In other takes on the Gerverse, along with having their identifying birthmarks, gers — or mers or bios or moyes — also have a "purity" mark that can be found either on their wrist, the back of their hand, neck or back that signifies that they're a virgin and that these marks disappear once they lose their virginity.
Some Gers — or mers or bios or moyes — who have lost their virginity might get fake "purity" marks for whatever reason. Every author has their own interpretation on how Gers — or mers or bios or moyes) came to be, but the general consensus is that gers (or mers or bios or moyes) were "created" to help ease the drastic decline of the world's birth rate.
The specific reason for the decline of the world's birth rate depends on the author's worldbuilding, but typically it has something to do with some kind of disease or natural (or unnatural) disaster or even some kind of alien invasion.
Do note, that the Gerverse and the Omegaverse are NOT the same, while both alternate universe tropes both feature mpreg, both AU tropes have their own sets of rules and worldbuilding. You can even combine the two alternate universe tropes if it sparks your inspiration.
