Spirituality, at its core, should be a source of liberation, peace, and personal empowerment. It's a journey of connecting with your own inner wisdom and the Divine. But here's the truth β the spiritual realm, like any powerful space, can be infiltrated by those who use it for control, ego, and manipulation.
We've all seen the red flags. The gurus who claim to be the only gatekeepers. The healers who feed on your fear. The teachers who demand your unquestioning loyalty. Those are the signs of an unhealthy β sometimes abusive β spiritual dynamic.
But what happens after you recognize those flags? How do you process the trauma of spiritual abuse? And how do you rebuild your connection to the sacred in a way that's truly yours?
Spiritual Abuse Isn't Always Physical
It's a systematic dismantling of your self-worth, your intuition, and your connection to the Divine β all under the guise of "enlightenment" or "higher learning." It happens in cults. It happens in one-on-one mentorships with predatory teachers. It happens in well-meaning but misguided spiritual communities.
Let me name the deeper, more insidious dynamics that show up after the initial red flags:
Gaslighting Your Intuition. You're taught to distrust your own inner guidance. If your gut screams "this is wrong," you're told your fear is just "ego resistance" or "spiritual immaturity."
The Burden of Unworthiness. You're constantly told you're flawed, not awakened enough, or carrying karma that only they can remove. Your progress is always just out of reach β dependent on their continued guidance, and often, their paid services.
Toxic Hierarchy. There's a rigid power structure where the leader's word is law, and questioning them is seen as questioning the Divine. That creates fear. That creates dependency.
Isolation from Support. You're subtly or overtly discouraged from having relationships outside the group β especially with anyone who might question the leader's authority.
Reclaiming Your Power: A Path to Healing
Recognizing these dynamics is the first, most crucial step. Healing from spiritual abuse is a journey of de-programming and reconnecting with your authentic self. Here's how to begin:
Acknowledge the Hurt. Validate your experience. Yes, you were manipulated. Yes, your trust was betrayed. It is not your fault.
Re-establish Sovereignty. You β and you alone β are the ultimate authority on your spiritual journey. No guru, teacher, or leader has a hotline to the Divine that you don't have access to yourself.
Trust Your Gut Again. Start small. Practice making decisions based on your own inner knowing. Pay attention to how your body feels around certain people and in certain environments.
Seek Safe Community. Find people and groups who encourage your independence, respect your boundaries, and welcome your questions. True spiritual teachers empower you to stand on your own two feet.
Be Patient with Yourself. Healing is not linear. There will be days you question everything β and that's okay. Be gentle with yourself as you walk this new, empowered path.
Spirituality is a beautiful, messy, deeply personal experience. It should never be used to make you feel small, afraid, or less-than. Your soul's journey is sacred, and it deserves to be protected.
Keep your discernment high. Trust your intuition. And never β ever β give away the keys to your own inner queendom or kingdom.
With love and truth,
Queen Tiyi El
