The Blood of the Covenant: Why I'm Not Big Mama, I'm the Curse Breaker

I woke up this morning to an interview I wasn't ready for. Tisha Campbell was talking with her son. She was trying to push him into making amends with a family member who had hurt him deeply. And he looked at her and said, "You keep trying to push me into trauma, and I'm going to need you to stop."

I felt that in my spirit.

Then she broke down the saying we've all heard a thousand times β€” "Blood is thicker than water." But she revealed the full quote: "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb."

I'm 52 years old, and I'm just now hearing this.

For my whole life, I was taught that family comes first. That blood is everything. That you forgive, you forget, you keep the peace, and you hold the family together no matter what it costs you.

I tried to be that. I tried to be Big Mama. I tried to keep the peace, absorb the disrespect, and pretend that history didn't hurt.

But I'm not Big Mama energy. I never was.

I am the generational curse breaker. And there is a huge difference.

Big Mama holds the family together β€” even when the family is tearing her apart.

The curse breaker releases the family β€” and chooses herself.

Big Mama suffers in silence.

The curse breaker speaks truth and walks away.

Big Mama passes down trauma as tradition.

The curse breaker breaks the cycle so the next generation doesn't have to carry it.

I have spent the last year of my life doing the hardest work I've ever done: releasing. Walking away. Setting boundaries that made people angry. Choosing peace over proximity. And crying tears I didn't know I had left.

And the whole time, I was told β€” directly and indirectly β€” that I was wrong. That I was unforgiving. That I was too harsh. That I was breaking the family apart.

But I wasn't breaking it. I was breaking the CURSE.

I wasn't separating from them. I was separating from the trauma they kept passing down.

The blood of the covenant β€” the bonds I CHOOSE β€” is thicker than the water of the womb. That means the people I choose, the ones who honor me, the ones who show up with love and respect β€” THAT is my family.

And that covenant is unbreakable.

So to the ones who think I'm wrong for walking away?

I'm not wrong. I'm a curse breaker. And the work I'm doing isn't for me alone. It's for my children, and their children. And generations I'll never meet.

I am not Big Mama. I never was.

I am the Curse Breaker.

And I'm not going back.
