When the Legend in Your Dream is Actually YOU: A Lesson from Tony Terry

We’ve all had those dreams that feel a little too real, right? The ones where you wake up laughing, but then you sit back and realize the universe was dropping some serious weight on your spirit.

I recently had a dream that I was standing there, plain as day, talking to the R&B legend Tony Terry. Now, if you know anything about "With You," you know that song is a masterclass in soul. In the dream, I’m telling him—thinking he’s just a regular person—that I’m hiring Tony Terry to sing at my wedding.

I told him, "I’m paying him to sing the whole song. Everyone is waiting for it, and I’m so excited!"

He looked at me with this boyish grin and tried to play it cool, saying, "Well, maybe Tony will shorten it." I wasn't having it! I started singing his own song right back to him—loud, proud, and straight from the belly. He looked at me, tickled pink, and said, "Wow, you’re actually singing that really good."

The Revelation: You Are Who You’ve Been Waiting For In the dream, I replied, "Not like Tony, though! He’s the best!" He just kept smiling. It wasn't until the very end that I realized I was singing to the man himself. I nearly fainted! But when I woke up, the message was clear, and I wanted to share it with all of you:

1. Don’t Shorten Your "Song"

In the dream, "Tony" suggested shortening the performance. How often do we do that to ourselves? we shorten our vision, we dim our light, or we give people the "radio edit" version of our power because we’re afraid the full version is "too much." Pay the price to play the whole song. Don't settle for a shortened version of your destiny.

2. Your "Belly" Voice is Your Power

When I sang "from the belly," the legend himself was impressed. Your power doesn't come from imitating others; it comes from that deep, gut-level authenticity. When you speak, lead, or create from that place, even the "greats" have to take notice.

3. You Belong in the Room

I was talking to a legend like he was just a friend. That’s a sign of unconscious competence. You are reaching a level in your life where you can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the people you used to admire from afar. You aren't "beneath" your breakthrough—you are already in conversation with it.

My Question for You Today...

Are you putting your inspirations on a pedestal while you keep your own voice on mute? Are you waiting for "The Best" to show up, not realizing that you’re already hitting the high notes? Stop waiting for the "Tony Terry" in your life to give you permission. Start singing from your belly today. You might just find that the greatness you’ve been looking for is the one staring back at you in the mirror with a grin.

Keep it soulful, keep it loud, and keep that tea sweet, because your ancestors are watching, and they always have your back!
