The Bitter Sweet Blog Series – Blog No. 9
I don't wear a warrior costume. I carry my supplies, check my sugar, take my insulin, and get on with life!
Let's get one thing straight: being a diabetic warrior doesn't mean you have to be brave every single day, smile through everything, or pretend diabetes is a walk in the park.
It means learning the ropes, getting back up when things go sideways, and refusing to let diabetes run the whole show.
And trust me, diabetes can be a real drama queen!
One minute, you're feeling great. The next, your blood sugar decides to do its own thing, and suddenly you're checking numbers, reaching for something to treat a low, or trying to work out why you're high when you did everything you thought was right.
Welcome to the club. We didn't exactly sign up for it, but here we are!
A Warrior Is Prepared
A diabetic warrior knows that preparation is power.
We carry our glucose, keep our insulin close, plan ahead, and learn what our bodies are telling us. We make adjustments according to our diabetes care plans, ask questions, and keep learning.
And yes, sometimes we forget something, get frustrated, or eat something without wanting to calculate every last bite. We're human, after all!
The trick isn't to be perfect. It's to be informed, responsible, and ready to handle the unexpected.
We Can Still Have a Life!
Being diabetic doesn't mean cancelling every dinner invitation, avoiding every birthday cake, or sitting at a restaurant watching everyone else enjoy their food.
We can go out, travel, laugh with friends, enjoy a meal, and make memories. We simply need to understand our own diabetes, plan sensibly, and make choices that work for us.
We don't need to explain our medical history to every person who sees us inject insulin or checks why we're drinking Coke Zero.
Sometimes, a simple “I've got it covered, thanks!” is all the conversation needs.
Warrior Rules? I've Got a Few!
- Know your numbers. They're information, not a judgment.
- Keep your supplies close. Hope for the best, prepare for the unexpected.
- Ask for help when you need it. Strong people do that too.
- Learn from the difficult days. One bad reading doesn't define you.
- Keep living! Diabetes deserves attention, but it doesn't get to take every moment away from you.
My Kind of Warrior
After nearly 30 years with Type 1 diabetes, I've learned that being a warrior isn't about winning every battle perfectly.
It's about knowing yourself, taking responsibility, finding a little humour when you can, and carrying on even when diabetes makes life complicated.
I am not just a blood sugar reading. I'm a woman with plans, dreams, family, friends, laughter, and a life to enjoy.
Diabetes comes along for the ride — but it doesn't get to drive!
So here's to every diabetic warrior out there: stay smart, stay prepared, keep your sense of humour, and remember that you are still YOU.
And if diabetes decides to throw a tantrum today? Take a breath, follow your care plan, and show that drama queen who's boss! 😉
Until next time, keep fighting, keep living, and remember: diabetes is part of your story, but it does not have to be the whole story.
