As you have gotten older, have you ever wondered why making friends is more complicated? In 2014, I moved to Atlanta with my new husband; except for my husband and some distant cousins, I didn't know a soul; I was so homesick I had created a vibrant life in Cleveland. But here are a few things I used to get to know my new city and to make really great friends. Moving to a new city can be exciting and daunting, especially when making new friends. But I am happy to say that the friendships I forged in Atlanta have lasted longer than my marriage. As midlife women, we often seek meaningful connections and enjoyable activities that resonate with our interests and lifestyles. Here are ten fun and engaging activities to help you build new friendships in your new home.
1. Join Local Clubs and Groups
Sports Leagues: Whether tennis, golf, or pickleball, joining a sports league is a great way to stay active and meet new people. I joined a walking group, Black Girls Run; runners and walkers met every morning at 5 am.
Book Clubs: If you love reading, find a local book club that shares your literary tastes. Check out the local library system. They offer adult book clubs in person and online.
Hobby Groups: Look for groups focused on your favorite hobbies, such as knitting, gardening, or photography.
2. Attend Community Events
Festivals and Fairs: Explore local festivals, fairs, and markets to experience the culture of your new city and meet fellow attendees.
Concerts and Performances: Enjoy live music events, theater performances, or open mic nights to connect with other culture enthusiasts.
3. Volunteer
Community Service: Volunteering for local charities, food banks, or animal shelters can be incredibly fulfilling and a great way to meet compassionate individuals. I volunteered with Meals on Wheels; every Friday, I would deliver hot meals to seniors; it was so lovely to get to know them, hear their stories, and be of service to my community.
Environmental Groups: Participate in local clean-up events or community gardening projects to meet like-minded people who care about the environment.
4. Take Classes
Fitness Classes: Sign up for yoga, pilates, or dance classes to stay fit and make friends.
Cooking Classes: Learn new recipes and culinary skills while bonding with fellow food lovers.
Language Classes: If you're interested in learning a new language, this can be a fun and interactive way to meet people.
5. Use Social Media and Apps
Meetup: Use Meetup to find local groups and events that match your interests.
Bumble BFF: This app is designed to help you make new friends and expand your social circle.
6. Explore Local Cafés and Bars
Regular Visits: Become a regular at a local café or bar where you can get to know the staff and other patrons.
Trivia Nights: Participate in trivia nights at local pubs to challenge your knowledge and meet new people.
7. Outdoor Activities
Hiking Groups: Join local hiking or outdoor adventure groups to explore nature and make friends.
Park Activities: Spend time in local parks where you can join group activities or strike up conversations with others enjoying the outdoors.
8. Attend Religious or Spiritual Gatherings
Church Services: If you're religious, attending services or joining church groups can help you connect with like-minded individuals.
Meditation Groups: Join a meditation or mindfulness group to find peace and camaraderie.
