ah yes. its officially summer (well almost).
june will always mark the beginning of the best time of the year for me, and i’ve always associated that with the school calendar. june meant school was ending, and even though i’m out of school for over half a decade now, it still brings me that same joy and excitement of better days to come. there’s something just so magical about summer, with the promise of more free time to be outside. as an adult yearning for that childhood joy, this month was truly an ode to that exact feeling.
i’m still searching for that scholastic book fair high. back in those days, 1-2 bucks meant you’d get your little trinkets (erasers, pens, pencils, post-its) at the fair. i’m sure this is where my scrapbooking and artsy hobbies started. and of course, my biggest hobby even now, book shopping. reading and book collecting are two separate hobbies by the way. and this fair started it all. i remember when i was a kid and they’d host these fairs at our school library centered around parent teacher conferences. my librarian would set up the new release table by the front. junie b jones’ next adventure, a series of unfortunate events, clifford the big red dog, barbie, disney channel, cartoon network, coloring books, you name it. it was all so colorful and sparkly i can’t remember if it was my happy tears or it was just that bright everywhere. but man oh man, was that some of the best days.
nostalgia can be both a vice or a solace to come back to. i think for me, it’s given me the chance to appreciate the little things in life that i definitely did not appreciate at the time. it’s been shifting my perspective to appreciate the present. the life that i’m currently living, i’d only dreamed of as a kid. being able to travel, have a job, be close with my friends and family. these are parts of my life i never want to take for granted. because i know they will just be memories that my future self will reminisce on, in every phase of my life.
archiving my life through social media and my own physical media has helped so much with that. especially with this mail club, i feel like i am constantly training myself to keep my creative juices in action. and it’s been so rewarding. this is the most fun i’ve had on the internet in a while, coincidentally since the whole point of this project was to stay offline. but it’s redirected my use of it, the same way i’d use it as a child. to be a little whimsical, experience new things, and connect with people. like it was originally intended for.
anyways, i’m excited for you guys to receive this june edition. the newsletter is going to be my take on the scholastic book fair catalog and its probably my favorite part of the whole thing. please feel free to dm me on tiktok with your thoughts and ideas for the next month or even this one’s!!!
