How to introduce yourself in European Portuguese? Easy-peasy!
Ana Reis
Are you getting anxious because you're going on a trip to Portugal and you can't introduce yourself to others?
Well, don't be! I can help you and it's not that hard, honestly!
The Portuguese are kind, hospitable, and generous people who will do their best to try to communicate with you either in Portuguese or in your mother tongue if you speak English.
However, it's always nicer to be prepared with some words to impress them!
How to greet in Portuguese?
Let's start by checking on the sentences of greetings in Portuguese:
Bom dia! - Good morning! (if it's morning and until before noon)
Boa tarde! - Good afternoon! (if it's in the afternoon and until before 18 pm)
Boa noite! - Good night! (if it's in the night after 18 pm and until midnight)
Also, you can say:
Olá - Hello!
Oi - Hello!
Tudo bem? - (Is everything ok?; informal)
Como vai? (how are you doing? - formal)
Como vais? (how are you doing? - informal)
Answering now:
Como vais? Tudo bem? (how are you doing? Is everything ok?)
Bem, obrigado/a! (Fine, thanks! You say "obrigado" if you're a male and "obrigada" if you're a female).
Then you can introduce yourself:
Como te chamas? (What's your name?; informal);
Qual é o teu nome? (informal);
Qual é o seu nome? (formal)
O meu nome é Sara. (My name is Sara)
Eu chamo-me Sara. (My name is Sara)
Eu sou a Sara. (I am Sara)
Prazer em te conhecer! (Nice to meet you!)
Let's see the whole dialogue:
Carla: Olá! Bom dia! Tudo bem?
Miguel: Sim, obrigado! E contigo?
Carla: Igualmente. Como te chamas?
Miguel: Eu sou o Miguel. E tu?
Carla: Eu sou a Carla. Prazer em te conhecer!
Now let's listen to the above roleplay:
How do the Portuguese greet themselves?
Another interesting thing to know is that when the Portuguese are greeting each other they normally exchange 2 kisses, one on each cheek.
Or if they know the person well they can give a strong hug as a greeting.
If the situation is formal there will be a handshake instead of a kiss/ hug.
Extra practice:
Here you can find another video with a dialogue:
or listen to this greetings video to practice on your own:
Now I'll also provide you with a Portuguese Podcast taken from "Português Simplificado" about the same subject. Enjoy!
To sum up, I recommend that you practice these simple sentences every day, and in the blink of an eye, you'll be ready to interact with a native speaker on your trip to Portugal.
Good luck and remember this motto: Practice makes perfect!
