Taking Initiative

This blog will be a little different to the past ones. I want to make this more interactive and help you lay out some goals for yourself. This will consist of writing down three goals for three different time frames. After writing down your three goals for each section, you will have three lines to write down how you will take the initiative to take the first steps to achieving these milestones or you may already be in the process of getting them done. If this is the case, put down what you did or have been doing to complete your desired task. Each time frame will be broken down into “small”, “medium”, and “large”. This way it will keep it simple and avoid keeping it over complicated.

“Small” will entail what you want to achieve in the next six months. “Medium” will be a full year and “Large” will be in the next 2-3 years. This way we have set finish lines for ourselves to achieve these goals. I believe that when we put our missions out into the world, whether that be writing it down, saying it out loud, etc. it makes it real and it may make us more compelled to get it done or start our journey. Sometimes we push off goals because we think we have enough time for later, we’re not ready, or we’re afraid of what others will think. We only have so much time here and Father Time doesn’t take commercial breaks, we must act sooner rather than later. I have put my worksheet with my goals below to give you an idea of how this project should look as well as a quote from the late Robin Williams that I believe fits this conversation perfectly.

Keep chipping away each day to improve yourself. You will see big changes on some days, small ones on others, and sometimes not at all (to the naked eye but the change is there) but what matters is that you always try and be consistent. Take control of your journey and never look back, someone might be catching up to you.

“You’re always afraid to take the first step because all you see is every negative thing 10 miles down the road. But you can do anything you want. You are bound by nothing. What are you passionate about?”

-       Robin Williams / Good Will Hunting

Goal Worksheet (Example)

Short Goals:

1)    Cut down bodyweight from 215-220lb to 210-212lb while keeping strength, improve lean muscle mass, and stay consistent with this weight range.

2)    Increase vertical jump to 35 inches on a Vertical Jump Mat.

3)    Work on Canva skills for AFF content and work material for Rhody Strength at URI.

Medium Goals:

1)    Release a blog each week.

2)    Release 2-3 new programs (each having different goals and focus qualities).

3)    Attend Bible Studies more or read the Bible more consistently.

Large Goals:

1)    Own a house.

2)    Compete in BJJ, Powerlifting, Bodybuilding, or Physique Competition(s).

3)    Grow AFF to 10,000+ followers.

Short Goal Steps:

1)    Be consistent with strength training, conditioning, and nutrition. Calories in, calories out mentality.

2)    Jump weekly to track progress and make sure the training regimen includes power/athletic movements.

3)    Watch more videos, ask those who are better than me, and act after learning. Practice.

Medium Goal Steps:

1)    Write down ideas, organize, and write rough drafts promptly so they can be edited and not feel rushed or behind.

2)    Experiment myself new training modalities, think about the population I would like the program to be pointed towards, talk shop with other coaches, and get their input on their experience with said approaches. Do several trial runs with myself and training partners.

3)    Keep the Bible open so it will make it easier to pick back up where I left off. Talk with my girlfriend about how I can do better, and we can do readings together. This will help grow our relationship with God and each other.

Large Goal Steps:

1)    Contribute to savings consistently that are budgeted appropriately. Keeping size and location in mind.

2)    Train consistently in the specific discipline. Be committed and ask for help from others. Take myself out of my comfort zone.

3)    Talk to others about how they advertise their content and spend money on courses on how I can spread my platform to a larger stage. I have already spoken to my boss and brother-in-law about how I can get better at these concepts.
