Learning Focus - Mindfulness & Meditation

Mindfulness and Meditation may seem similar at first glance, but they serve distinct and valuable purposes. Mindfulness involves paying attention to your current mental focus, while Meditation involves deliberately guiding your thoughts in a relaxed state.

Over the past three years, I’ve learned to take time for myself, stepping away from the hustle and bustle to meditate and be mindful of my thoughts. There is undeniable truth in the practice of mindfulness and meditation. Being mindful can be as simple as knowing exactly where your mind is wandering and being conscious of the content you allow into your thoughts.

Consider what you allow into your mind. Does it benefit you positively? Are you more productive due to the content you consume? There’s a familiar song that reminds us to “be careful, little eyes, what you see, be careful, little ears, what you hear.” It prompts us to think about what captures our attention, and perhaps a more crucial question is what we willingly allow to occupy our thoughts.

When life’s demands attempt to distract you from your current task, take a moment to step back. Visualize your favorite place, whether it’s a tranquil beach, a heart-to-heart conversation with a friend, or a spontaneous road trip. Regardless of your favorite place, pause and imagine yourself there.

For me, meditation differs slightly from mindfulness. During my meditation time, I disconnect from the world and immerse myself in instrumental music or listen to meditative content on platforms like YouTube. However, I’d like to caution you about the content you choose for meditation. Remember that your mind is a powerful entity, absorbing and manifesting what you feed into it. I recommend meditating with soothing music from composers like Bach, Beethoven, jazz, or classical pieces. Personally, I’ve never encountered anything negative when listening to such “classics”; in fact, it tends to have the opposite effect.

Be mindful and meditate. Through these two things you will gain more focus all around.
