Learning To Focus

There is so much information available on ways to “learn to focus” and on ways to “help you maintain focus”. So many in fact that in this article I will list them all off for you, yet to give each one it’s proper attention, I will write an article for each one.

I went through my book collection, magazine collection and even looked up some information online. Here are the top 15 with a brief description for you on the best ways to help you with “Your Focus”.

  1. Eliminate Distractions — keep distracting items hidden from your sight when working on a project.
  2. Reduce Your Multitasking — this can actually hamper your ability to remain focused.
  3. Mindfulness & Meditation — this helps you to remain calm when certain stressful situations may arise in your project.
  4. Get More Sleep/Rest/Take a Nap — there is actually studies out there that suggest that taking a short nap when a project becomes too stressful helps you regain focus.
  5. Focus On What You Are Doing In That Moment — when you remain focused on that particular moment and what you are doing in that moment, it gets 100% of your attention.
  6. Take Short Breaks — taking these short breaks can actually help you regain focus if you seem to have lost it. It distracts your brain and can keep brain fog to a minimum.
  7. Connect With Nature — walk away and take time to look out the window, go walk around in the grass, sit under a tree with a drink, any of these will help with your energy towards your project.
  8. Exercise — this is a good break to take and can be as simple as taking a walk around the office, up and down the stairwell, or maybe even do some jumping jacks. Refocus on something else and get that heart rate moving.
  9. Train Your Brain — keep a puzzle book close by to help you strengthen your brain. You could get a Sudoku book, a crossword book, or even a word search book. Keep it in your desk drawer, take 10 minutes and work on a puzzle then return back to your project.
  10. Listen To Music — listening to music you like to listen to while working on a project not only can help you to focus, yet can also help the time fly by and you get more work done.
  11. Eat Well — keep the sugary items to a minimum. Especially those made with refined sugars. Fresh fruits have proven to give you a better boost in the memory banks and help with better focus.
  12. Set A Daily Priority — when you start on a project, select that one priority in the project that you desire to accomplish during your work session.
  13. Create A Calm WorkSpace — the calmer your workspace the better. Pictures, music, lighting, positive trinkets on your desk, these all are reminders of the things you enjoy. Enjoyment brings better focus on the project and tasks.
  14. Use Timers — I am just learning this one. Another name for it could be HyperFocus. You set a time for a designated time (no more than 20 minutes) and just focus. When the timer goes off, you then set another one and focus on something different.
  15. Switch Up Your Tasks — this focusing technique is said to help you to stay alert and productive for a longer period of time. If you have a large project you are working on. Break it down into different tasks. Focus on each task for a designated time, then switch it up.

As you can see there is a lot of information available for learning to focus. Each one in my humble opinion will also be set by your particular personality. You may find that doing one the above items works better in your life than another. These are just 15 of the different ways I found that can help with better focus so that you can complete your project on time, if not even early.
