Learning To Focus-Train Your Brain

Who remembers that ole’ saying about your muscles?

The saying: If you don’t use it, you will lose it.

How many of you know that there is a lot of truth within that saying?

Your Brain is a Muscle and it requires usage to workout.

There are different things that YOU CAN DO to help you exercise that Brain Muscle. You Can pick up a problem solving book, like a crossword puzzle, Sudoku or even a word search. You Can also pull out a jigsaw puzzle that has a minimum of 100 pieces with a very busy look to it or play a game of chess. There are many brain-stimulating video games available out there these days. heck even Sudoku is available as an app. I do caution you though when it comes to the video game side of stimulating your brain, you will want to limit the screen time that you are on as to not “over stimulate” your brain to the point of not being able to regain focus on your task at hand.

Personally for us as a family, we buy the challenging board games and have a family game night at least once a month (we are working on getting back to once a week, we have a few irons in the fire if you will). I am not compensated by the company that makes any of these games. I am just sharing with you what we like to play together as a family. The following also contain suggestions from friends who like to exercise their brains as well.

  1. Sagrada — definitely a family favorite around here. Actually my man who did not like to play board games other than chess, found this one to be quite enjoyable. As long as we were playing this game, we could count on him playing with us. Choose your card, roll the colored dice, place your dice to fill up your card. Watch out though, you have to follow the pattern. If you don’t choose wisely then you may not be able to finish your card. First one to fill their card correctly…Wins!
  2. Tsuro — This is an easy to understand game, yet also requires forethought before placing your cards. The object is to be the last one on the board. Be careful where you place your cards or you may just end up driving your game piece right off the board. If this happens you are out of the game. The object is to get everyones game piece off the board so that you are the Last Guy Standing!
  3. Kingdom Builders — Another family favorite. This game has many different options available inside it. You choose the way you want the boards set up, then depending on the cards that are drawn depends on how you earn your points as you build your own kingdom. We love love love this game as well!
  4. Five Crowns — This game came recommended by a friend who plays it. It is a five-suited Rummy style game. I enjoy playing Rummy, so I think we will add this to the “purchase” list to try.
  5. Wordle — This game also comes recommended by a friend. Apparently this is one that can be found in magazines/newspapers. The object is to unscramble letters to make words, then use certain letters to answer the riddle (at least in magazines/newspapers). Was also told that this is available in an app called NYT Games. Not sure how the game works on the app.
  6. Mastermind — Another game recommendation from a friend. This game is apparently a fast simple strategy game where players take turns setting and solving Secret codes. There are more than 2, 000 possible combinations which means that the game is different every time you play it. Who doesn’t like games that teaches stem and steam principles like deductive reasoning and logic. Definitely sounds like a good Brain Game to me. Another one to add to the “purchase” list.
  7. Logic Puzzles by Puzzle Baron — Books filled with lots of Brainteaser Games. Sounds like a good book to purchase to carry around in the car for when you are early to an appointment and want something to tied you over until your appointment starts. This book apparently has many different kinds of Brainteaser Games in it. Choose the ones you like to play. When you are finished, pass it onto a friend or leave it in the lobby somewhere for someone else to use.
  8. The Classic Wooden Triangle Peg Game — Who can forget this one? Play it every time we go to Cracker Barrel when we are waiting for our order. This was one that no matter where my man started, he always ended up with just one peg left on the triangle. I never did get the pattern for this one. Yet always have fun attempting to get it down to one peg.
  9. Evolution Board Game — This one came recommended as well. I have not personally played this one. Sounds like a fun one to put on the “purchase” list. There are actually three versions of this game. With this game you get to experience a Shared Ecosystem where evolution takes place in a dynamic connected world, where food is scarce, and predators roam (remember there are three versions currently available). You apparently create Your Species by using an easy-to-learn, but intricate game system. Then you use trait cards to create and adapt your species to survive and thrive inside the ecosystem. Your species can become a carnivore or gain defensive traits to avoid being prey to the other players. There are apparently multiple paths to your victory and every game is unique. You have endless replayability with traits that are combined to create over 12,000 different species. And every game offers a new world to explore. Definitely sounds like this would be a good game.

As you can see there are plenty of options available for you to Train Your Brain. Use that muscle so that you don’t lose it. Remember that saying: Use It or Lose It…Let’s work on NOT losing it.

After you have done some Brain Training come back and let us know what you did and how it worked for you. Let us know what Brain Games you enjoy playing. The more we share, the more we grow.
