Carl Born Free Wharton was born and primarily raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He grew up in West Philly in a so-called “middle class” area called Wynnefield. He spent some of his formative years down “The Bottom” at his Beloved Grandmother’s (Pauline Ramsey) house on 38th & Poplar. The harsh dichotomies and undeniable similarities between these two neighborhoods taught and showed him graphically the range of black life during the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. He knew a life before crack and one after crack, and that created inside his soul a relentless conscious perspective that has placed him on the frontlines of the struggle for freedom, justice, and equality. The fabric of his community was forever changed during the governmental assault of guns, drugs, and mis-education, and he was determined to find out who was responsible for these horrendous crimes. Since Born came of age during Hip Hop's Cultural revolution, he understands the supreme importance of the written and spoken word. His love of reading and exploring the pantheon of black writers and other great literary figures set him on the path of becoming a lifelong scribe. Born wants to communicate and connect with the reader’s heart by invoking raw emotions and holding up a mirror, so we can examine ourselves and the world around us. Love is the connective tissue that unites everything that he does and writes about. Love is the fire that burns brilliantly in his heart. Born lives to write and build on a variety of classical and contemporary ideas and thoughts but his greatest desire is to compel the reader to get the hell up and confront this life right here and right now! He wants us to activate our activism and use our God given talents to bring light to a world increasingly becoming dark.
