Anxiety and depression are different experiences, but they can sometimes be connected. Some people experience mostly anxiety. Some people experience mostly depression. Others experience both at different times or even together.
Anxiety often feels like fear, worry, overthinking, tension or being on high alert. Depression can feel like heaviness, emptiness, low motivation, sadness, numbness or exhaustion.
A simple way to understand it is this: anxiety can feel like too much energy in the system, while depression can feel like too little. But this is only a gentle explanation, and everyone’s experience is different.
Anxiety and depression can overlap because both affect thoughts, emotions, sleep, energy and the body. Anxiety can be exhausting over time. If your nervous system has been in alert mode for too long, you may eventually feel drained, hopeless or shut down.
Depression can also create anxiety. When motivation is low or life feels heavy, responsibilities may build up. This can lead to worry, pressure and fear about coping.
Both anxiety and depression can affect how you see yourself. Anxiety may say, “What if something goes wrong?” Depression may say, “What is the point?” Both can be painful and both deserve compassion.
If you are experiencing both, it is important not to blame yourself. You are not lazy. You are not weak. You are not broken. You may be overwhelmed, depleted or in need of more support.
Small steps can help. You do not have to overhaul your life in one day. Try beginning with basics: drinking water, eating something gentle, opening the curtains, stepping outside, messaging someone safe or writing one honest sentence about how you feel.
Grounding can help anxiety, while gentle activation can help low mood. This might mean a short walk, stretching, tidying one small area or doing one manageable task.
Support matters. If anxiety or depression feels intense, long-lasting or difficult to cope with, reaching out to a mental health professional, doctor or trusted support person can be an important step.
You do not have to wait until things are unbearable to deserve help.
Anxiety and depression can both make you feel alone, but you are not alone. Healing can begin with one small kind step.
