Health anxiety is when worries about your health become frequent, intense or hard to step away from. You may notice a body sensation and quickly fear the worst. You may search symptoms online, check your body often or ask for reassurance repeatedly.
Health anxiety can feel very real and frightening. It is not attention-seeking. It is not being dramatic. It is anxiety attaching itself to health, safety and uncertainty.
One reason health anxiety feels so powerful is because the body naturally has sensations. A tight chest, headache, stomach feeling, fast heartbeat or dizziness can happen for many reasons. But when you are anxious, your brain may interpret those sensations as danger.
This can create a loop. You notice a sensation. You worry about it. Your anxiety rises. Your body creates more sensations. Then you feel even more convinced something is wrong.
Searching symptoms online can make this loop worse. You may look for reassurance, but often end up feeling more scared. The internet can give too much information without context, and anxiety tends to focus on the most frightening possibilities.
A gentle way to respond to health anxiety is to pause before checking. Ask yourself: “Am I seeking helpful information, or am I trying to get instant certainty?” Anxiety usually wants certainty, but health and life often involve some uncertainty.
You can also try saying: “I notice my anxiety is focusing on my body right now. I can care for myself without spiraling.”
This does not mean ignoring your health. It is always okay to seek medical advice when something is new, severe, persistent or concerning. But after you have received appropriate support, the work becomes learning how to reduce the anxiety cycle.
Grounding can help when health fears rise. Feel your feet on the floor. Breathe out slowly. Name three things you can see. Place your hand on your chest and say: “I am feeling scared, but I am safe in this moment.”
You can also set boundaries with symptom searching. For example, you might decide not to search symptoms at night or not to check your body repeatedly.
Health anxiety can soften when you build trust with your body again. Your body is not your enemy. It may be sensitive, tired or anxious, but it is trying to protect you.
You deserve calm, support and reassurance that does not feed the spiral.
