A murder mystery dinner party has two moving parts: feeding your guests and guiding them through a story. The simplest way to manage both is to prepare the evidence first and fit dinner around the investigation. Use this checklist as a planning aid, then follow your chosen game’s host guide for the actual clue releases and rules.
Before buying: match the game to the group
Confirm the guest count, age guidance and host arrangement. The Last Dinner: Original Edition requires exactly six character players and one separate nonplaying host, seven people total. It is ages 14+ and estimates 60–90 minutes plus optional dinner breaks. All six roles are required. Do not buy it for four participants hoping to remove two suspects.
A week before: invitations and food
Confirm attendance before assigning roles. Send the date, start time, dress expectations and dietary questions. Decide whether dinner comes before the game or between rounds. Choose a meal you can prepare in advance, and keep drinks away from evidence sheets. Costumes are optional. The mystery does not require real food, drinks or special props to work.
Two days before: protect private material
Download and unzip the files. Read the host guide privately and separate the role booklets, public evidence, accusation ballots and solution. Print the required pages using the kit’s instructions. The Last Dinner uses US Letter, single-sided, at actual size; black-and-white works. Label three round folders or envelopes so nobody sees later evidence early.
Your preparation checklist
• Six confirmed players and a separate host for The Last Dinner.
• One private role booklet per guest.
• Shared evidence sorted into its three rounds.
• Six accusation ballots, pencils and blank note paper.
• Host guide and solution kept out of player view.
• Meal timing and any dietary needs confirmed.
• A clear table and enough light to read.
• A start time and planned breaks.
On the day: check the room and pacing
Set places before guests arrive. Put only opening materials on the table. Keep the answer file closed and the host’s notes out of sight. Give late arrivals a brief recap of public information without handing them unreleased clues. If food needs attention during a round, pause the investigation rather than asking guests to continue while the host is away.
At the start: explain the ground rules
Tell everyone which information is private, when evidence appears and how accusations will be made. Remind guests to follow required disclosures even if their character would rather hide a fact. Invite quieter players to contribute and keep conversations focused enough that everyone can hear. Acting can make the evening fun, but careful reading matters more than theatrical confidence.
Before dessert: ballots, then reveal
Collect accusations before opening the solution. Ask players to identify the evidence behind their theories. Reveal the ending using the host instructions, then discuss the clue that was hardest to interpret. The original Last Dinner has a fixed culprit and solution. The Experienced Edition is a separate purchase with a different solution, not a random variation inside the original kit.
Can you host this dinner mystery remotely?
The Last Dinner supports a host-led approach using your own voice or video call: send role PDFs privately and read or share evidence by round. Its bonus offline HTML host tool contains roles and spoilers and belongs with the host only. It is not a secure multiplayer player portal.
Set your table for a mystery
