Designs in Fabric — Course 1

Have you ever had a photograph or an idea that you thought would make a beautiful fabric collage—but weren't quite sure how to turn that idea into something you could actually create in fabric?

That's exactly what we'll do in this course.

I'll take you through the same process I use to move from an initial idea to a design that is ready to become a fabric collage.

What You'll Learn

We’ll work with AI to develop and refine your design, turning your creative ideas into something you can begin to envision in fabric. AI doesn’t replace your creativity—it gives you a new way to explore ideas, make changes, and bring those ideas to life. In this video, I’ll show you how to get started.

Discover how AI can help turn your creative ideas into action. I’ll show you how to develop, refine, and experiment with your design until you have an image you can envision creating in fabric.

Learn how to take your finished design, size it correctly in Canva, and prepare it for custom fabric printing. I’ll walk you through the process I use to turn a digital image into printed fabric ready for your collage.

Learn how to turn your finished design into a full-size workable pattern. I’ll show you how to size your design, create a PDF, and print it in tiled pages at the correct size—giving you the pattern you’ll need to begin your fabric collage.

Learn how to put your finished pattern to work. I’ll show you how I use freezer paper as a guide for selecting, cutting, and placing fabrics—while leaving plenty of room to make creative choices and make the design your own.

Meet Your Instructor

Hi, I’m Linda Lawson. I’ve been quilting for more than 25 years, and throughout those years I’ve been especially drawn to art quilts and fabric collage—turning photographs, ideas, and inspiration into something completely unique in fabric.

I’m not afraid to experiment! I’ve tried many different products, techniques, and approaches to discover what works best for collage quilting. I also love exploring the newest tools and technology and finding ways to use them to make designing and creating collage quilts easier and more accessible.

Through my courses, I want to share what I’ve learned, simplify the process, and encourage you to experiment along with me. There are no hard-and-fast rules in fabric collage. Sometimes the most interesting results come from being willing to try something new and make the process your own.
