About Me

Doug is a `musical spelunker`- taking deep dives into every musical cavern he can find, trying to illuminate them for himself and map them for others. Starting out in the `serious` world of classical music, after studying under the daunting Gunther Schuller and playing principal trumpet in the Santa Rosa Symphony for 30 years, he's migrated to the `serious fun` world of jazz and creative music. He's worked and played with local luminaries (SF Mime Troupe, Beach Blanket Babylon, Harold Jones, Deborah Winters, Kenny Washington, Erik Jakobsen, James Moseley - to name a few) and has played shows with the Moody Blues, Yes, Four Freshmen, Johnny Mathis, Glen Campbell, Bob Newhart, Chris Botti, among many others. His pieces have been played around the world, and locally by the SF Symphony, Santa Rosa, ACT, SF Chamber Singers and lots of other jazz and classical ensembles. He's published many of his big band pieces and is on the 2nd of four planned songbooks, published by Sher Music. He plans to continue composing and recording while settling into the genteel life of a writer (and pianist).
