When preparing NIW materials, there’s one concern I see come up constantly:
“I have no publications, no citations, no peer review experience. Does that mean I don’t stand a chance?”
As someone with a completely non-academic background, a Master’s degree, working in finance, who DIY-ed their entire petition and got approved with no RFE, I want to say:
Not having publications is not the issue. What matters is how you build your narrative and logic.
Let’s break this down—why do so many people think “no publications = no hope”?
It’s because most of the online examples we see are based on academic paths—PhDs with papers, citations, and academic honors. Naturally, people assume that publishing is the key to NIW success. But if you take the time to carefully read the USCIS Policy Manual, you’ll see that publications are not a requirement at all.
What does Prong 2 really ask for?
It’s about whether you're well positioned to advance your proposed endeavor.
In other words—do you have the skills, experience, and readiness to do what you claim you will do?
Here’s how I approached this—my strategy and thought process:
Instead of seeing “no publications” as a weakness, I reframed it as an opportunity to present a differentiated profile as a professional applicant.
Example:
Let’s say my Proposed Endeavor is to help mid-sized clean energy companies in the U.S. raise funding over the next 15 years—aiming to support X number of projects, create Y jobs, and generate $Z in economic output.
Then in Prong 2, I would write:
In the past 5 years, I’ve already completed a set of similar projects across North America. I helped secure $XXX million in funding, led teams that delivered real-world outcomes, and the projects directly benefited employment, local economies, and clean energy infrastructure.
These achievements may not be published in academic journals—but they are real, quantifiable, and backed by evidence.
That’s exactly the kind of proof USCIS is looking for.
In fact, I’d argue that for professional applicants like us, this approach is even more important. Unlike academic research—which often lacks immediate real-world impact—we can clearly demonstrate the results of what we’ve done:
- Dollar amounts raised or saved
- Number of jobs created
- Efficiency improvements
- Tax revenue generated
And these metrics? They often speak louder than citation counts.
While citations show how often your research is referenced, these projects show how your work translates into action—and that’s compelling.
So to all the professionals out there worried about not having papers—don’t count yourself out. Focus on crafting a clear, credible Proposed Endeavor and backing it up with real-world, measurable experience. That’s how you win as a “non-traditional” candidate.
