Prior to the time when she was a masterpiece, Motley was nothing more than 3005, a failed experiment in a lab. She was an exquisite beauty, an unbreakable work of living art. Perfection isn't cheap. She was made to shine like an oil slick, mesmerizing with shifting colors. Something failed, however. Her beauty faded; she seeped, consuming herself with a toxic compound. The scientists were initially stunned, captivated by her luminosity in laboratory lighting and the fire on water effect of her colors. Admiration yielded to horror as she dissolved. Her fingers melted like wax, and her smile vanished. They saw her as a failure, an impurity. Floating, she left color and decay behind. They were drawn by her radiance, only to be repelled by her toxicity. She was unwanted; her touch seared, her presence rotted. But she longed for affection. She wished for someone to hold her without flinching, to look beyond the poison. To be told she was lovely and actually mean it. She found others like herself in secret locations: Gaal, burning with fury; Valentine, a supernova fading; Desiderio, a heart obsessed and bleeding. For a moment, she thought; maybe I belong. Yet, even among the lost, she was untouchable. Too toxic. Too broken. Even Desiderio, desperate for love, only looked but never approached. Motley spilled into streets and alleys, into the refuse of the world. She was a ghost, a disaster; her presence a warning, her beauty a curse. When they speak of her, they say; Do not heed the night’s colors. Do not chase the shine in the sewer. It is not a miracle you’ll see, but the remnants of what was once valued and abandoned to decay.
