August Awareness Series – Week 2: National Hair Loss Awareness Month

Looking Beyond Hair Loss: Supporting Wellness from Within

"True wellness begins by nourishing the body from the inside out."

More Than Just Hair

Hair is often closely tied to how we see ourselves. It can influence our confidence, self-esteem, and even how we show up in the world. So when we notice more hair in the shower, on our brush, or thinning around our hairline, it's natural to feel concerned.

The truth is, hair loss affects millions of people every year. While it's often associated with aging, it can happen at any stage of life and for many different reasons.

National Hair Loss Awareness Month reminds us that hair loss isn't something to hide or feel ashamed of.

Instead, it's an opportunity to understand our bodies better and support our overall wellness.

Sometimes our hair is simply telling us that our body needs a little extra care.

Understanding Hair Loss

It's normal to lose some hair every day. In fact, most people naturally shed 50 to 100 hairs daily as part of the normal hair growth cycle.

However, when hair begins thinning noticeably, comes out in larger amounts, or changes suddenly, it may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider.

Hair health can be influenced by many different factors, including:

  • Genetics
  • Hormonal changes
  • Aging
  • Stress
  • Certain medications
  • Illness or surgery
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Chronic health conditions
  • Tight hairstyles that pull on the hair
  • Overuse of heat or harsh chemical treatments

Rather than focusing only on the hair itself, it's important to consider what may be happening inside the body.

Hair Often Reflects Overall Wellness

Our bodies are incredibly intelligent.

When the body is under stress or lacking key nutrients, it naturally prioritizes vital organs over things like hair and nails.

That doesn't mean something is seriously wrong—but it can be a reminder to slow down and evaluate your overall wellness.

Hair doesn't exist in isolation. It reflects many of the daily choices we make.

Nourishing Your Body From Within

Healthy hair begins with supporting your whole body.

Protein Matters

Hair is made primarily of a protein called keratin.

If your diet doesn't include enough protein, your body may prioritize protein for essential functions before supporting healthy hair growth.

Consider including protein sources such as:

  • Lean poultry
  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Greek yogurt
  • Beans
  • Lentils
  • Tofu
  • Tempeh
  • Nuts and seeds

Vitamins and Minerals

A balanced eating pattern helps provide nutrients that support healthy body functions, including those involved in maintaining healthy hair.

Some important nutrients include:

  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Vitamin D
  • Biotin
  • Vitamin B12
  • Folate
  • Vitamin C
  • Omega-3 fats

Rather than guessing which supplements you may need, speak with your healthcare provider if you have concerns about nutrient deficiencies.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration supports every system in the body.

While drinking more water won't magically change your hair overnight, staying hydrated supports healthy skin, scalp, and overall body function.

Simple habits like carrying a reusable water bottle or adding fresh lemon to your water can make hydration easier throughout the day.

Stress and Hair Health

One of the most overlooked factors affecting hair wellness is stress.

Periods of significant emotional or physical stress can sometimes contribute to increased shedding several weeks or even months later.

Life happens.

We all experience stress.

The goal isn't to eliminate stress completely—that isn't realistic.

Instead, we can learn healthier ways to manage it.

Some ideas include:

  • Prayer or meditation
  • Deep breathing
  • Gentle movement
  • Spending time outdoors
  • Journaling
  • Reading
  • Talking with someone you trust
  • Getting adequate sleep

Caring for your emotional wellness is just as important as caring for your physical health.

Be Gentle With Your Hair

Daily habits matter.

Simple ways to care for your hair include:

  • Avoid excessive heat styling.
  • Limit harsh chemical treatments when possible.
  • Use a wide-tooth comb on wet hair.
  • Avoid hairstyles that pull tightly on the scalp.
  • Protect hair from excessive sun exposure.
  • Choose gentle hair care products that work well for your hair type.

Healthy habits support healthy hair over time.

Hair Wellness Starts With Overall Wellness

When we focus only on finding the "perfect" shampoo or serum, we may overlook the bigger picture.

Healthy hair often begins with healthy daily habits.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I eating balanced meals?
  • Am I getting enough protein?
  • Am I staying hydrated?
  • How well am I managing stress?
  • Am I getting enough sleep?
  • Am I caring for my overall wellness?

Small improvements in these areas can benefit much more than your hair—they support your entire body.

When to Seek Medical Advice

Although some hair shedding is normal, it's important to speak with your healthcare provider if you notice:

  • Sudden or significant hair loss
  • Bald patches
  • Hair loss following illness or surgery that concerns you
  • Persistent scalp irritation
  • Hair loss accompanied by other unusual symptoms

Your healthcare provider can help determine whether additional evaluation is appropriate.

Small Steps You Can Take This Week

Choose one or two habits to focus on:

  • Eat a protein-rich breakfast.
  • Drink more water.
  • Add colorful fruits and vegetables to your meals.
  • Practice five minutes of deep breathing.
  • Prioritize sleep.
  • Schedule routine healthcare appointments.
  • Spend time outside.
  • Reduce stress where possible.
  • Be gentle with your hair during styling.

Remember, lasting wellness comes from consistency—not perfection.

Reflection Questions

Take a few moments to reflect:

  • Am I nourishing my body in ways that support my overall wellness?
  • Have I been under more stress than I realize?
  • What healthy habit could I begin this week?
  • How can I show myself more kindness during seasons of change?
  • Am I listening to what my body may be trying to tell me?

Sometimes the smallest changes lead to the greatest growth.
