July Awareness - Week 1 - Self-Care

Small Choices, Big Blessings: Why the Little Things Matter More Than You Think

When you hear the words self-care, what comes to mind?

A spa day? A massage? A weekend away?

While those things can be wonderful, true self-care isn't something we do once in a while. It's the daily choices that either support our well-being or slowly drain it.

July is recognized as Self-Care Month, making it the perfect time to pause and ask ourselves an important question:

How am I caring for myself each day?

At Exploring New Blessings, I believe self-care isn't about adding more to your already full plate. It's about making simple choices that help you feel better—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

The truth is, many of us don't realize how much our bodies and minds are trying to tell us.

Feeling tired in the middle of the day?

Struggling to focus?

Feeling overwhelmed or irritable?

Having trouble sleeping?

Reaching for sugar or caffeine to get through the afternoon?

Often, we think something is wrong with us when our bodies may simply be asking for the basics: hydration, nourishment, movement, rest, fresh air, and moments of peace.

That's why our focus this week is:

Small Choices, Big Blessings

Because the smallest habits often have the biggest impact.

Let's take a closer look.

Hydration: Your Body's Silent Need

Did you know that even mild dehydration can affect your energy, concentration, and mood?

Our bodies rely on water for nearly every function—from supporting digestion and circulation to helping regulate body temperature and transporting nutrients where they're needed most.

Sometimes what feels like hunger, fatigue, or brain fog may simply be your body's way of saying, "I need more water."

Try starting your day with a glass of water before reaching for coffee or tea.

You may be surprised by how much better you feel.

Nourishment: Fuel, Not Restriction

For years, many of us have been taught to think about food in terms of what we should avoid.

But what if we shifted our focus to what we can add?

More leafy greens.

More colorful vegetables.

More fresh fruit.

More whole, nourishing foods.

These foods provide vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber that support energy, digestion, and overall wellness.

You don't have to change everything overnight.

Start with one simple question:

What can I add to my plate today that will help me feel my best?

Fresh Juice: A Simple Way to Add More Goodness

One of the reasons I love juicing is that it makes it easier to get a variety of vegetables into my day.

Fresh green juice can be a simple way to increase hydration and add nutrients to your routine.

My favorite combinations include celery, cucumber, lemon, green apple, and ginger.

Simple ingredients. Powerful nourishment.

And remember—you don't need to make it complicated.

One juice doesn't change your life overnight.

But one juice can become a habit.

And habits change lives.

Movement: It Doesn't Have to Be Intense

We've been conditioned to think exercise has to be hard to count.

But movement isn't punishment—it's a gift.

A short walk.

Gentle stretching.

Chair exercises.

Dancing in your kitchen.

Movement helps support circulation, mobility, energy, and mood.

The best kind of movement is the kind you'll actually do consistently.

Fresh Air and Sunlight: Nature's Reset Button

Have you ever noticed how different you feel after spending a few minutes outside?

Natural light helps support healthy sleep patterns and energy levels.

Fresh air can help clear your mind and create a sense of calm.

Even five minutes outside can shift your perspective.

Take your coffee to the porch.

Watch the sunrise.

Sit quietly in the evening and listen to the birds.

Sometimes healing begins with simply slowing down.

Stillness: The Self-Care Habit We Often Ignore

We live in a world that celebrates busyness.

But constantly being busy doesn't mean we're well.

Creating moments of stillness through prayer, meditation, deep breathing, or quiet reflection can help us reconnect with ourselves.

You don't need an hour.

Start with five minutes.

Five minutes to breathe.

Five minutes to pray.

Five minutes to simply be.

Because peace isn't something we find when life finally slows down.

It's something we create in the middle of the chaos.

Your Self-Care Check-In

As you move through this week, ask yourself:

  • Have I had enough water today?
  • Have I nourished my body with foods that help me feel good?
  • Have I moved my body in a way that feels supportive?
  • Have I stepped outside for fresh air?
  • Have I created even a few moments of stillness?

Remember, self-care isn't selfish.

It's how we refill our cup so we can continue showing up for the people and things we love.

And here's the beautiful part:

You don't have to do everything at once.

Choose one small habit.

Practice it consistently.

Notice how you feel.

Then build from there.

Because small choices create big blessings.

This Week's Reflection

Which area of self-care have I been neglecting the most: hydration, nourishment, movement, rest, fresh air, or stillness?

Quote of the Week

"Every healthy choice is an act of self-respect."

Next week, we'll continue our Self-Care Month journey by exploring Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month and discussing how compassion, understanding, and listening to our bodies can help us support those living with invisible challenges.

Until then, remember:

You are worth the time it takes to care for yourself.

One healthy habit at a time.

With love and encouragement
