July Awareness - Week 3 Disability Pride Month

Every Journey Matters

Last week, we explored Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month and discussed the invisible challenges many people face each day.

This week, we're continuing that conversation through the lens of Disability Pride Month.

At its heart, Disability Pride Month is about recognizing the value, dignity, contributions, and unique experiences of people living with disabilities.

It's a reminder that every person deserves to be seen, respected, included, and celebrated.

And perhaps most importantly, it's a reminder that our worth is never determined by what we can or cannot do.

Looking Beyond Labels

We live in a world that loves labels.

Too old.

Too young.

Too slow.

Too different.

Too limited.

But labels rarely tell the whole story.

Behind every label is a person.

A person with dreams.

A person with strengths.

A person with talents.

A person with gifts that deserve to be recognized.

Disability Pride Month encourages us to look beyond what someone may struggle with and instead see the whole person standing before us.

Every Journey Looks Different

One of the most beautiful lessons we can learn is that there is no single path to wellness.

For some people, wellness may look like running a marathon.

For others, it may look like taking a short walk.

For some, it may mean preparing healthy meals.

For others, it may mean conserving energy for the tasks that matter most.

Neither journey is better.

Neither journey is less important.

They're simply different.

And different doesn't mean less.

Redefining Success

Our society often measures success by productivity.

How much did you accomplish today?

How busy were you?

How much did you get done?

But what if success looked different?

What if success meant listening to your body?

Honoring your limits?

Asking for help when needed?

Showing courage in difficult circumstances?

Getting through a challenging day with grace?

Sometimes success isn't about doing more.

Sometimes success is about honoring where you are.

The Gifts We Often Overlook

People living with disabilities often develop qualities that inspire us all.

Patience.

Creativity.

Problem-solving.

Perseverance.

Adaptability.

Resilience.

The ability to keep moving forward despite obstacles.

These are strengths worth celebrating.

And these strengths remind us that challenges do not define us.

Our character does.

What Disability Pride Month Can Teach All of Us

Whether you live with a disability or not, there is wisdom here for everyone.

We all face obstacles.

We all have limitations.

We all have days when things don't go as planned.

But we also have gifts.

We have strengths.

We have a purpose.

And we each have something meaningful to contribute.

The world doesn't need us to be perfect.

It needs us to be authentically ourselves.

Build-Your-Own Rainbow Snack Board

This week's activity is colorful, nutritious, and easy to adapt to different abilities and preferences.

Many individuals living with disabilities face unique challenges when it comes to preparing meals, trying new foods, or getting enough variety throughout the day. Creating a simple snack board can be a fun way to explore different colors, textures, and flavors while encouraging balanced choices.

Try building your board with a mix of vegetables, fruits, and protein-rich foods:

โค๏ธ Red Bell Peppers

๐Ÿ“ Strawberries

๐Ÿงก Mini Sweet Peppers

๐Ÿ’› Yellow Bell Peppers

๐Ÿ’š Cucumbers

๐Ÿฅ Kiwi

๐Ÿ’š Celery

๐Ÿ’š Snap Peas

๐Ÿซ Blueberries

๐Ÿ’œ Purple Cabbage

๐Ÿง€ Cheese Cubes

๐Ÿฅš Hard-Boiled Eggs

๐Ÿซ’ Olives

Serve with hummus, guacamole, or Greek yogurt ranch dip.

Why We Love It

๐ŸŒˆ Encourages variety without feeling overwhelming

๐Ÿ’ช Includes fiber, healthy fats, and protein

๐Ÿ“ Offers lower-glycemic fruit options

๐Ÿฅ’ Easy to customize based on preferences and abilities

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Makes healthy eating more interactive and enjoyable

ENB Tip

Not everyone enjoys the same foods, and that's okay.

The goal isn't perfection. The goal is exploring new options and finding nourishing foods that work for your body and your lifestyle.

As you build your rainbow board, remember:

Just as every color contributes something different to the plate, every person contributes something valuable to the world.

Different strengths.

Different abilities.

Different journeys.

Equal worth.
