Protecting the Skin You're In
As we wrap up our July Awareness series, we're ending with a topic that affects all of us.
July is UV Safety Awareness Month —a reminder that spending time outdoors is wonderful for our minds, bodies, and spirits, but it also comes with responsibilities.
Many of us love summer.
The sunshine.
The longer days.
The beach.
The backyard gatherings.
The morning walks.
The beautiful sunrises and sunsets.
Being outside can help us feel refreshed, energized, and connected to nature.
But while we're enjoying the sunshine, it's important to remember that caring for ourselves also means protecting ourselves.
The Body You've Been Given
One of the greatest acts of self-care is learning to appreciate and care for the body you have right now.
Not when you lose weight.
Not when you're healthier.
Not when life is less busy.
Right now.
Your body works hard for you every single day.
It carries you through challenges.
It allows you to experience life's joys.
It deserves your care and attention.
Protecting your skin, staying hydrated, getting enough rest, and making nourishing choices are all ways of honoring that gift.
A Personal Reflection
This awareness month hits close to home for me.
Over the years, I've had skin cancer removed from both my face and my leg.
Those experiences taught me something important.
When we're younger, it's easy to believe we'll always have time to take better care of ourselves later.
We'll wear sunscreen next time.
We'll drink more water tomorrow.
We'll pay attention to that spot another day.
But our bodies are always keeping score.
Today, I view protecting my skin differently than I once did.
It's not about fear.
It's about respect.
It's about appreciating the body God has given me and doing my best to care for it.
That's one of the reasons UV Safety Awareness Month matters so much to me.
Not because I want people to worry.
But because I want them to understand that prevention is one of the most loving forms of self-care.
A few simple habits today may help protect your health tomorrow.
And that's a gift worth giving yourself.
Sunshine Is Wonderful—In Balance
Sunlight offers many benefits.
It encourages us to spend time outdoors.
It can improve our mood.
It helps us feel connected to the natural world.
But balance is important.
Too much sun exposure can be harmful, which is why taking simple precautions matters.
Consider:
☀️ Wearing sunscreen when spending extended time outdoors
☀️ Wearing a hat and sunglasses
☀️ Seeking shade during peak afternoon hours
☀️ Taking breaks from direct sunlight
☀️ Drinking plenty of water
These small habits can help protect your skin while allowing you to enjoy everything summer has to offer.
Don't Forget Hydration
One of the easiest self-care habits to overlook during the summer months is hydration.
When temperatures rise, our bodies need additional fluids.
Signs you may need more hydration can include:
💧 Feeling tired
💧 Headaches
💧 Dry mouth
💧 Feeling sluggish
💧 Difficulty concentrating
Try carrying a water bottle with you and adding fresh lemon, cucumber, or berries for a refreshing twist.
Your body will thank you.
Self-Care Is Prevention
One lesson I've learned is that self-care isn't only about fixing problems after they happen.
It's also about preventing them whenever possible.
It's the habits you choose today that support your future well-being.
Whether that's drinking more water, spending time in the shade, eating nourishing foods, getting enough sleep, or taking a walk outside, these choices add up.
Small choices.
Big blessings.
