Arduino Uno Vs. ESP32-S3

Why ESP32-S3 is becoming a preferred choice over Arduino Uno.

Arduino Uno has been the classic beginner board for years. It uses an 8‑bit microcontroller, has a simple pin layout, and has a huge community of tutorials, so it’s excellent for first‑time projects like blinking LEDs, reading basic sensors, and learning core programming concepts. It shines best in its simplicity and fundamentals, being beginner-friendly and great for understanding basic electronics and code structure.

ESP32‑S3, in contrast, is a much more powerful 32‑bit microcontroller with a dual‑core CPU up to 240 MHz, built‑in Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy, and a lot more memory and peripherals. This makes it better suited for modern projects that require wireless connectivity, faster processing, more sensors, and even some artificial intelligence (AI)- related tasks. ESP32-S3 shines best for high device connectivity, data logging, cloud interaction, or more complex logic, while still allowing code to be written in familiar environments like Arduino or MicroPython.

For my own projects and teaching, I want a board that can handle both hands‑on sensor work and more advanced features like Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and richer code examples. That’s why I’m choosing ESP32‑S3 as the core of my learning kit and future electronics content, while still respecting Arduino Uno as an important first step in many people’s journey. Other ESP32 variant boards will also be considered.

Coming soon: Frempong ESP32‑S3 Programming Learning Kit

I’m working on a Frempong electronics learning kit built around the ESP32‑S3. The idea is simple: one board and a set of modules and sensors (such as buttons, LEDs, displays, camera, environmental sensors, etc.) and practical components you can use to learn both hardware and coding (software) in a structured way. Together, they’ll support step‑by‑step projects that start from basic signals and build up to connected, data‑driven applications.

This learning kit is for people who want to go beyond simple examples and explore more real-world projects, real‑world sensing, and practical engineering ideas using a modern microcontroller platform. More details and project examples will follow as the kit gets closer to release.
