Willkommen!

I’m Nina Greipel, author of the cookbook and daughter of Annemarie and Michael Greipel, founders of the former Gasthaus German Restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky. Opened in 1993 at the Brownsboro Center, our cozy, family-run restaurant was known not only for its authentic German cuisine and desserts, but also for being a beloved gathering place for those who shared a love for all things German.

Over nearly three decades, we created countless memories and formed lasting friendships with our guests. In 2022, my parents decided to close the restaurant and retire. Moved by the outpouring of support, I began collecting our cherished recipes to create this cookbook—an effort to preserve the flavors and spirit of Louisville’s favorite German restaurant.

Though my background is in photojournalism, growing up in the Gasthaus naturally pulled me deeper into the world of food. For this book, I built a home studio and invested in new camera equipment to personally recreate and photograph every dish. As a self-taught kitchen enthusiast, this has been a heartfelt journey.

I hope this cookbook sparks warm memories and helps carry forward the rich tradition of German cooking in Louisville and beyond.
