Challenge Question

For a steel cable, the stress at the elastic limit is 2.5x108 Pa. What would happen

(if anything) to the extension of the cable at the elastic limit if the radius was increased? Explain your answer.    (4 marks)

Solution

Young Modulus =   stress / strain   =  (FL) / (Ax)

so         x    =     (FL)/(AE)    =   (F/A) (L/E)

length and young modulus are constant

max stress (F/A) is a fixed ratio

so extension would NOT change
