Many of you have probably signed up for one or more races this winter. For some, it’s a clear goal to work toward; for others, it’s simply something enjoyable to have in the calendar. Often, it’s a bit of both. Having a race planned can make training feel more motivating — but as race day gets closer, that feeling can shift.
The work you’ve been putting in over the last couple of months can suddenly feel more demanding as race day approaches. And that’s usually when the doubts start to show up. For some, it’s nerves. For others, it’s performance anxiety — or a mix of both. You begin questioning whether you’re actually ready, even though your training clearly shows you are.
From my experience, both racing and coaching, that tension usually settles once the race begins. Once you’re moving, things tend to fall into place. But that doesn’t make the feeling beforehand irrelevant. It’s part of the experience — and sometimes we just need a reminder of that.
No matter your level, your goal, or what this race means to you, I hope these thoughts give you something grounding to carry with you — both before the start and during the race.
Kind regards,
Zebastian
