How plyometric training makes you a more efficient runner

Mileage and endurance will always be a cornerstone of running performance. But many runners overlook the elements outside of running that can make them more efficient. That’s where plyometric training comes in.

Plyometric work develops your ability to produce and control force — the link between strength and speed. It improves the body’s stretch–shortening cycle: how muscles and tendons store and release energy with every stride. For runners, that means smoother motion, shorter ground contact, and the ability to maintain form as fatigue sets in. It’s what allows strength to transfer into efficiency, turning effort into movement that feels lighter and more controlled.

You don’t need long workouts or complicated progressions. Try adding a few plyometric drills as part of your warm-up or in one to two short sessions per week. Small adjustments like that can make a noticeable difference over time.
