About James Murch
James Murch is a British artist based at Cockington Court in Torquay, where he maintains his studio practice and teaches observational painting and drawing. With extensive experience in figurative art, James works primarily from life, producing portraits, plein air landscapes, and still life paintings that reflect a sustained interest in light, form, and atmosphere.
Regular plein air sessions across Devon and the South West inform his studio work, while his portrait practice combines strong design with careful observation to capture both likeness and character. Alongside commissioned work and exhibitions, James runs courses and guided sessions that help students develop their understanding of proportion, tone, and colour mixing through direct observation.
His paintings are held in private and public collections, including the permanent collection at Torre Abbey. His teaching draws on a deep knowledge of traditional methods and a belief in learning through looking — helping artists to see more clearly and paint with confidence.
