About Me
I have been interested in history for as long as I can remember. I spent my early teens devouring Jean Plaidy and Winston Graham novels by the dozen. At university, I moved onto first-hand historical experience reading books by Vera Brittain and novels by Winifred Holtby. In between, I read the Roman classics, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and Viking Sagas.
Now I find my interest and inspiration is in the development of the urban middle class, particularly the development of the medical profession in London. My Tales of Tooley Street series is inspired by a real family of Apothecary Surgeons who lived and worked there from the late 18th century to the mid 19th century.
I also write with my archaeologist husband, Martin Herdman, on Ancient Egyptian religion and history. We have a collection of classic titles and new work on Ancient Egyptian Sacred Numbers.
Julia Herdman Books also sell prints and other digital products for the home, study, and office.
