The Birth of My Materials & Website

The Birth of My Materials

  • Before 2020:  Like many Chinese teachers, I teach four to five classes, which means preparing four to five lesson plans. While I use the Integrated Chinese textbook, I found myself dissatisfied with relying solely on its vocabulary and dialogues. To create more engaging lessons, I decided to develop my own slides. Initially, this was incredibly time-consuming, as crafting slides for the next day's class consumed most of my preparation time.
  • When the pandemic came, there was a blooming of online professional development opportunities: workshops, online meetings, conferences, etc. That was the time I started learning about "backward design".  I adopted this approach and redesigned my curriculum over the summer 2020. This proved to be a game-changer. With a clear roadmap, I could focus on developing each unit with a specific project in mind and measurable learning objectives. To empower students to assess their own learning, I developed progress checks (can-do statements) with examples and answer keys. These have been invaluable for student preparation and confidence. I received great feedback from the students as they are very clear what they will be assessed on for that unit.
  • After 2021, I made more modifications of my units to make learning goals, objectives more clear and connected. I also gradually expanded my materials to include Quizlet study sets, projects, and more. This year I focused more on incorporating authentic materials, creating authentic tasks and project-based learning. Those really helped enrich my curriculum.
  • 2022: After taking the advice from my department chair, I created accompanying handouts for note-taking, exercises, and interactive activities to enhance student engagement beyond slides. Finally, to offer students more choice and flexibility, I incorporated project choice boards into many units. This has been a popular addition, allowing students to demonstrate their understanding in various ways.
  • 2023-2024: As my curriculum became more stable, I started focusing more on "organization". I made a few improvements on organizations: 1) I combined these handouts into a single Google Doc, aligning them with the slides for easy reference. 2) I also created detailed Quizlet study sets for vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation, complete with audio recordings. Organizing these study sets into unit folders improved accessibility.

The Birth of My Website

  • Since incorporating backward design, TPRS techniques, PowerPoint presentations with handouts, and progress checks into my teaching, I've noticed a significant improvement in student understanding and engagement. Both my students and I find the learning process more enjoyable. In recent years, many of my students have won awards for their work, which is incredibly rewarding.
  • I'm part of several online teacher communities where we often discuss common challenges like excessive lesson planning and PowerPoint creation. While we share materials, resources are scattered and incomplete. Many of us desire comprehensive unit bundles to streamline our workload and focus on student interaction. Recognizing the potential value of my teaching materials, I've spent this summer organizing them into user-friendly unit bundles aligned with popular textbooks.

The Impact I Hope to Make

  • I believe my materials can significantly benefit other teachers by offering high-quality, time-saving resources. I've carefully crafted lessons using authentic materials and innovative teaching techniques, particularly for challenging grammar concepts. By sharing my work, I hope to make teaching more enjoyable and less stressful for educators while enhancing student learning experiences.
  • My goal is to foster a community of passionate language teachers who can collaborate to create exceptional learning experiences. By sharing my materials and encouraging open collaboration, I hope to revolutionize language education, making it more engaging, efficient, and rewarding for both teachers and students.
