A Tale of Natures' Magic
A tale about a creature who eats plastic… and helps the forest grow.
A tale about a creature who eats plastic… and helps the forest grow.
Boris the Binny – A Tale of Nature’s Magic is a 32-page illustrated children's book written and illustrated by me, Samira Rijnen.
It follows Boris, a curious creature made from a bin, who discovers he can help nature by eating plastic. Alongside his friends — Lottie the gardening otter, Roger the squirrel wizard, and Fred, another binny — Boris learns that even the smallest forest dweller can have a big impact.
This project reflects my core passion: blending storytelling and illustration to teach environmental values in gentle, playful ways. It’s currently being submitted to publishers, and I'm preparing many more Boris adventures.
Age group: 4-8 years old (Or anyone who just loves Boris!)

We are all Boris.
In a world full of plastic, pollution, and disconnection, it can feel overwhelming to know where to begin. Boris reminds us that we don’t need to do everything—we just need to do something, and do it with love.
Plastic in this story represents more than waste. It symbolizes how far we’ve drifted from nature, and how healing that relationship starts with care, curiosity, and friendship.
Boris isn’t a superhero. He’s soft and unsure, like many of us. But through small actions, he finds his power—and so can we. Nature is not helpless. It holds a quiet, ancient magic: the ability to come back, over and over again. That is the magic in this story.
You don’t have to save the whole forest. Just help a little. The forest will meet you halfway.
A soft-hearted creature with a big mouth — for plastic, that is. Boris loves discovering new things about nature and helping clean the forest by eating the trash that pollutes it. Sometimes he worries he’s too small to make a difference, but he’s learning that asking for help is part of being brave.
"Yay, a new friend!"
Part gardener, part adventurer, and full-time tomato enthusiast. Lottie tends to her forest garden with care and teaches Boris how to listen to nature. She has a Jane Goodall energy — wise, gentle, and not afraid to get her paws dirty. (She also makes the best vegetable soup in the world, according to Boris).
"Just observing and being still with nature will tell you a lot."
A flying squirrel of few explanations and many pockets. Roger wears a pointy hat that always seems a bit crooked. His magical staff hums softly when near tree roots, and he carries a translator stone that lets him speak with everything from mushrooms to moss.
He insists he’s not that kind of wizard — though no one really knows what kind he is. He just… knows things. Strange things. Forest things.
“Hmm? Oh yes, the forest speaks all the time. You just have to listen between the rustles. Ah! And never trust a mushroom that winks at you.”
Boris the Binny – A Tale of Nature’s Magic is currently on submission to publishers. I plan to expand this project into future books, activity printables, and animation.
