“Why am I crying? It was absolutely precious and will help a lot of families.”
— Seabee Spouse
This was an amazing book for kids to read, or be read to, to better understand what their parents do. I as a Seabee myself really enjoyed the way it’s geared towards the littles gaping in a way the daily life of a parent Seabee either deployed or day to day life. Thank you for writing this for all kids whom have a Navy Seabee parent to enjoy.
— John , BU & Dad
This book is amazing. Often people don’t know who or what a Seabee is and this book changes that. It gives readers a look into what a US Navy Seabee is and what they do. It goes over all 7 jobs and if I’m being honest, I did cry a little. While we don’t have kids, my spouse is gone right now so to see someone talk about our families and community like this is amazing. People don’t know that for the most part, Seabees are humanitarians who do work to help others home and abroad. If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would.

My Dad Is a Seabee
What does it mean to be a Seabee kid?
In this heartfelt picture book, a young child proudly shares what makes their dad different from other Sailors. He doesn’t go out to sea — he builds roads, schools, bridges, and hope.
But sometimes Seabees deploy.
Through gentle storytelling and warm illustrations, My Dad Is a Seabee helps children understand:
• What Navy Seabees do
• Why deployments happen
• How families stay strong while Dad is away
• And why deployments aren’t forever
With reassuring language and a joyful homecoming moment, this book reminds military children that love always comes home — sometimes even on your birthday.
Perfect for:
-Navy Seabee families
-Military children facing deployment
-Homecoming celebrations
-Military appreciation gifts
-Preschool and elementary readers

About the Author
Hi, my name is Mariah.
I’m a Seabee wife, a mom of five boys, and the artist and author behind MSP Art and Seabee Kids.
I started creating My Dad is a Seabee during my husband’s deployment with NMCB 1. After reading multiple books about military families, my kids were frustrated—they couldn’t connect with any of them. None of the sailors looked like their dad. One of my kids even said, “My dad doesn’t go on a ship… and their boots aren’t even the right color.”
That moment stuck with me.
I searched everywhere for books that truly represented Seabee families—the dirt, the builds, the reality—but I couldn’t find anything that felt right for my kids.
So I created it.
What started as one book turned into a mission: to give Seabee kids something they can actually see themselves in—something that feels like home, even during deployment. Something they can look at and think, “That looks like my mom,” or “That looks like my dad.”
Everything I create is rooted in real life, real families, and real experiences—because representation matters, especially for kids learning to understand sacrifice, service, and pride.
