When Trauma Isn’t Recognized—Care and Outcomes—Break Down
Healthcare teams are expected to care for sexual assault survivors, often without the training, tools, or support they need to do it well.
The result:
- Unintentional re-traumatization of survivors
- Increased staff stress, burnout, and uncertainty
- Delays in care and communication breakdown
- Lower patient satisfaction and trust
- Increased legal and organizational risk
Most healthcare teams aren’t lacking compassion.
They’re lacking training, structure, and confidence.
What Trauma-Informed Care Looks Like in Practice
Trauma-Informed care is not about slowing down care.
It's about delivering care that is safer, more effective, and more responsive, without adding unnecessary burden to your team.
When healthcare teams are trained and supported, the difference is clear:
- Patients feel safer, heard, and respected.
- Staff communicate with greater confidence and clarity.
- Escalation and re-traumatization are reduced.
- Care becomes more efficient, not less.
- Teams feel more prepared and less overwhelmed.
This is not about adding more work:
It's about changing how care is delivered; so it works better for everyone.
Led by Experience, Grounded in Real Care
Marie McKenzie brings over 26 years of frontline emergency department experience, combined with deep expertise in trauma-informed care.
With experience as a sexual assault nurse examiner and trauma-informed nurse educator, she has seen firsthand the gaps that leave healthcare teams unprepared to care for survivors; and what it takes to close them.
Through the International Sexual Assault Coaching Institute (ISACI), she equips healthcare teams with the knowledge, structure, and confidence needed to provide compassionate, effective,
and trauma-informed care.
This training is grounded in real clinical experience, practical application, and a deep understanding of both patient and provider needs.
Because how we respond matters, every time.
